Chapter 198 He Is Stronger Than He Looks

Astra didn’t cry out loud.

He bit down hard on his lower lip until blood seeped through the skin.

Large tears struck the floor one by one, stirring tiny puffs of dust. He forced the sobs in his throat back down with all his strength.

“He’s holding it in,” Diana said, her voice carrying a trace of respect. “He’s protecting you, Cindy. He knows that if he breaks down and cries, it will hurt you even more. This cub has already learned how to guard others. He’s a little wolf who knows how to protect.”

At Diana’s words, I could no longer hold back. Tears spilled from my eyes.

“Astra.”

I stepped forward and wrapped my arms tightly around him from behind.

“Cry if you want. In front of me, you don’t have to endure it.”

Astra turned and buried his face against my chest.

Even then, he didn’t wail. He only cried silently, while his dry, thin hands awkwardly patted my back instead, as if he were the one trying to comfort me.

The servants around us had already broken down in tears.

Jewel was crying so hard she could barely stand, supported by two young maids.

“Enough crying!”

I lifted my head, eyes red, but my voice rang with absolute resolve

“This is a happy occasion. Astra is back. This is the greatest joy the Silverpeak Pack has known. Wipe your tears and welcome Astra with smiles!”

Even as I spoke, tears slipped down again, and I wiped them away roughly. “What are you crying for? We should be grateful. He’s alive. That alone is enough.”

At that moment, Tom came over with a cup of hot tea. He was wiping his own tears, but as an old wolf who had weathered countless storms, his thoughts remained clear.

“Ms. Spencer,” Tom said softly. “Astra has only just returned, and his body is far too weak. I’ve been thinking. The Pack’s territory is still under reconstruction, full of craftsmen and chaos. And that place is where the massacre happened. Burnt ground everywhere. If Astra goes back now, the memories may be triggered. It wouldn’t be good for his body or his mind.”

I nodded. “I was thinking the same. The house here in the Royal Court may be quiet, but the facilities are complete, and the hospital is close.”

Then let Astra stay here for now,” Tom suggested. “We can arrange for him to live in your courtyard. The warm chamber next door has been empty for years and gets good light.”

“Knock through the connecting door,” I ordered at once. “Tonight I’ll sleep next to him. If there’s any movement, I’ll hear it immediately.”

After a flurry of activity, Astra was finally settled.

He took a hot bath, changed into clean, soft silk sleepwear, and drank a bowl of steaming mushroom soup.

Those simple comforts finally chased away the lingering chill that clung to him.

He lay in bed but kept his eyes fixed on me, his hand gripping the corner of my sleeve tightly.

Only after I promised again and again that I wouldn’t leave did exhaustion finally overtake him, and he fell into a deep sleep.

When I stepped out of the room, dusk had already fallen.

“Tom.”

I called him, who was about to go to rest.

“Yes, Ms. Spencer?”

“Send someone sharp to Baron Kazek’s estate,” I said, rubbing my aching temples. “Tell Roger that Astra is back.”

Tom was startled. “Right now?”

“Yes. But be clear,” I instructed. “Say that although the child has returned, his physical and mental condition are both poor. He is completely exhausted today. Tell them not to rush over tonight. We don’t want to frighten the child, and we don’t want any grand displays.”
