Cindy’s POV:

Astra kept writing.

I remember Father saying that he was once pierced through the shoulder by a spear on the battlefield. He pulled it out and kept fighting.

I am his son. I can do it too.

He set the pen down and looked at me, shaking his head with unwavering resolve.

He pointed at his leg, then pointed at an invisible “throne.” His gaze was terrifyingly firm.

He was willing to embrace hell for that position. To never be looked down upon again. To stand up and

run once more.

“Do you see now?”

Diana’s voice echoed in my mind, tinged with awe and fierce joy. “This is the seed of an Alpha. He is sacrificing his present body for future power. Cindy, you should be proud. He does not need your pity. He needs your consent.”

I drew a deep breath, wiped away my tears, and nodded hard.

“Alright.” I gripped his hand tightly. “Since you’ve made your choice, I’ll face this with you. Even if the pain kills you, I’ll hold your hand and never let go.”

But I knew, just as Rupert had said, this was not a decision for the two of us alone.

That evening, carrying Astra’s decision with me, I boarded the carriage bound for Kazek Manor.

Kazek Manor was brightly lit that night.

When word spread that I had come to discuss Astra’s leg treatment, Roger immediately gathered all key family members. Even Maya-whose health had only just improved-was carried into the main hall.

The atmosphere was oppressively heavy.

When I laid Rupert’s two options out in the center of the hall…

“Hellish pain, nerves preserved,” and “Painless surgery, life-long risk of disability,” every conversation died instantly.

Steam rose from teacups, yet it could not dispel the chill filling the room.

“How… how do you choose something like this?” Fiona was the first to break down, eyes red as she covered her mouth and sobbed. “He’s so young! He’s just eight years old, and you’re going to break his bones without anesthesia? That would hurt him to death!”

“But that dreadbeast sedative is even worse!” The second son, David Kazek, slammed the table, frantic. “Thirty percent chance of permanent disability! If we lose that gamble, he’ll drag that leg for the rest of his life! Then what was the point of finding him at all, if we can’t even let him live properly?”

Roger paced the hall with his hands clasped behind his back, like a lion trapped in a cage.

His face was ashen, veins bulging on his forehead.

“Cindy.” He stopped abruptly and turned to me, his voice hoarse. “Is there really no other way? Is Rupert being too conservative? What about doctors from other cities? We’ll pay anything!”

I shook my head. “Rupert is the best doctor in the kingdom and the foremost expert on werewolf anatomy. His judgment is final. There is no third choice.”

Roger shut his eyes in pain.

“I … I can’t bear it.”

This man, who killed without blinking on the battlefield, now looked as fragile as a child. “Did you see him when he first came back? Skin and bones! How much suffering did he endure these past three years? He finally comes home, enjoys a few days of peace, and now we make him suffer like this? What if the pain breaks him? What if he goes into shock and never wakes up?”

“I think we should use the sedative,” Roger said through clenched teeth “Even if there’s risk… if we care for him properly, maybe he’ll recover. Anything is better than letting him go through that.”

“How foolish!”

Maya, who had been resting with her eyes closed, suddenly opened them and slammed her cane against the floor.

“Roger, your heart has clouded your judgment!”

Her voice was old, yet carried undeniable authority. “Who is Astra? He is Silverpeak’s sole heir. He is a future duke. You want him to gamble with becoming crippled just to spare himself pain? If he truly becomes lame, how will he command respect? How will he go to war? How will he stand in this devouring noble world?”

“But Grandmother!” Roger shouted, his neck flushed red. “We are talking about breaking bones without anesthesia! Can you really bear that?”

“I cannot bear it!” Maya’s hands trembled. “He is my great-grandson. I would take his place if I could. But…”

Her words caught in her throat.

She looked at me, her eyes full of struggle and helplessness.

This was a deadlock.
