Chapter 221 Before the Surgery

Cindy’s POV:

The day to treat his leg was set on a gloomy morning.

Just as dawn began to break, the gates of the ducal estate were knocked upon.

Before the scheduled time, the Kazek carriages were already lined up outside.

Roger arrived with Fiona and several elderly family members, marching in as a group.

Behind them, servants carried and hoisted crate after crate of priceless medicinal materials.

There was plantain for stopping blood, yarrow rushed overnight from Southreach, and several boxes of rare mineral powders with unfamiliar names, all of them giving off a faint, cold fragrance.

“What…”

Looking at a room nearly overflowing, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Roger, Dr. Rupert is the best doctor in the country. What doesn’t he have in his kit? You’ve practically moved the family vault. Does Maya know about this?”

“She’s the one who forced us to bring all of them!”

Roger wiped the sweat from his forehead. “She said Rupert having medicine shows his skill, while us bringing medicine shows our heart. If… I mean, if any of it can make the child hurt even a little less, even just a little, then it’s worth it!”

Only then did Roger’s expression ease slightly.

Everyone crowded toward the back courtyard.

The air felt frozen solid.

The closer they got to Astra’s room, the heavier each step became.

Everyone knew what awaited behind that door.

This was not a treatment for a simple fever or cold. Instead, it was a deliberate, man-made torture.

They were breaking a child’s already healed bone, grinding it down, and setting it again.

“Cindy…” Fiona clutched my sleeve, her voice trembling. “I-Is there really no stronger anesthesia? I didn’t

sleep at all last night. Just thinking about that child suffering like this makes my heart feel like it’s being fed into a grinder.”

I stopped and looked at the group of elders, their faces full of worry, even faint pleading.

“Everyone.”

I took a deep breath, forcing down the tremor in my chest. “I’m heartbroken too. I didn’t sleep either. But this was Astra’s own choice.

“The family couldn’t decide two days ago and handed the choice back to me. And I handed the choice to Astra.”
