“Mother, you’re far too naive, Cindy said bluntly “Someone like Margaret only cares about face when she’s dealing with people stronger than herself. With you… forgive me for being direct, she’s never honored her word.”

“You-” I bristled. “How dare you speak of an elder like that? Whatever else she is, she’s still a princess?”

I’m saying this for your own good, Cindy cut in calmly. “We’re not going there to reminisce. We’re going to take back what’s ours. When we arrive, you will watch. Don’t speak for her. And don’t use my dowry to curry favor, Otherwise, don’t blame me for not sparing your dignity

My temper flared. “What kind of attitude is that No respect for your elders! I am the Queen. I don’t need you teaching me how to behave. When we return, I will make Adam discipline you properly!”

Cindy didn’t even look at me. She simply closed her eyes, as though settling in for a nap. “We’ll see.”

The carriage finally came to a stop before the gates of the Crystal Palace.

Princess Margaret’s private residence was extravagance incarnate-more lavish than certain royal villas.

I was about to have our arrival announced when the guards stepped forward and blocked the path.

“Your Majesty. Duchess Spencer.” They bowed, but didn’t move aside. “Our apologies. Her Highness Princess Margaret has just stepped out She is not in residence.”

“Stepped out?” I blinked, “Where? When will she return?”

“That… we don’t know. It may be quite late.”

I felt a flicker of disappointment and turned to Cindy. “If she isn’t here, we can return. another day.”

“Another day?” Cindy didn’t budge. “If she’s not Here, we’ll go inside and wait. We’ll wait until

she returns.”

“Your Grace, that would be improper-” the guard began.

Cindy grabbed my wrist and strode forward. “I am a Duchess. This is the Queen. Under the heavens, save for the King’s inner chambers, there is nowhere we cannot enter! Move!”

Her grip was astonishingly strong. I stumbled after her, dragged straight through the gates.

The guards, cowed by our status, didn’t dare lay hands on us. They could only watch as we marched in unimpeded.

“Slow down! Have you no sense of decorum?” I lussed, mortified at this brazen intrusion.

Cindy ignored me entirely and walked straight into the main hall.

Margaret and I shared a taste for opulence.

Gold and crystal gleamed from every corner. Rare antique vases stood like sentinels. Masterpieces hung along the walls-worth a fortune, even if I couldn’t tell one brushstroke from another. The carpets were silk imports from distant eastern realms.

“Impressive,” Cindy muttered, scanning the room with a cold smile. “The Crystal Palace outshines even your Rose Palace. The cosmetics shop must be losing money spectacularly.”

Heat crept up my neck.

Margaret had wailed about deficits and begged for subsidies, yet her residence glittered like a dragon’s hoard.

Where did that wealth come from? From me.

Still, I refused to admit my foolishness. “Margaret is a royal princess. She’s never been short

of funds.”

Cindy said nothing more. She guided me to a sofa and sat.

“Tea. Pastries,” she ordered casually, like the lady of the house.

The servants scrambled to obey, bringing out their finest refreshments.

Cindy sipped her tea, then rose. “Mother, sit. This is only my second visit here. Last time was rushed. I’d like to take a look around.”

“Don’t wander off,” I warned sharply. “This isn’t your ducal estate.”

“Don’t worry. I know my limits.”

With that, she moved toward the rear courtyard unhurried and self-assured.

A few maids attempted to stop her, but she slipped past them with a few quick sidesteps.
