After everything that had happened, we both needed time to relax. The carriage rolled slowly along the snow-covered forest road. It creaked and swayed, calm and steady.
The next morning, the outline of Silverpeak Castle appeared in the pale sunrise.
The air smelled like pine trees and cold snow. It smelled like home.
Before the carriage even stopped, I heard shouting outside.
“They’re here! Ms. Cindy’s back!”
Tom’s excited voice echoed through the thick carriage walls.
Then, hurried footsteps followed.
The door swung open. A flash of red rushed at me.
“Cindy!” Viola threw herself at me so forcefully that she almost knocked me back into the carriage.
Behind her stood the rest of them. Toast, tall and solid as a tower, grinned happily. Sterling leaned in the shadows, casually spinning a dagger in his hand. And Stick stood there with a piece of grass in his mouth, his iron staff in hand, looking as relaxed as ever.
“Why are you all blocking the entrance?” I laughed, steadying Viola as I looked at my friends who had been through life and death with me.
Viola hooked her arm through mine, not caring that Adam was standing right there. She teased, “They are waiting for you in the main hall. Reginald’s there too. We didn’t dare get too close.” She snorted. “And guess what? Before we came, we all joked about giving Stick to you as a wedding gift. He had come back on his own. Isn’t that funny?”
Stick rolled his eyes and spat out the grass. He protested “Wedding gift? Viola, can you stop talking nonsense? I’m a professional. A professional, okay?”
I looked at Stick. He was clearly embarrassed but still trying to act cool. I couldn’t help laughing. “Alright, stop pretending. Do you think I don’t know you? If they sent you off as my wedding gift, those old men at the monastery would come down and break your legs.”
Viola leaned close to my ear and lowered her voice. “Hellust wants to stay at the Royal Court and get a job, You know the monks at Moonridge. They’re all lifelong bachelors who only know how to train and serve the Moon Goddess. They study magic all day and never work outside the mountain. There isn’t even enough game up there to feed them. Their income is little. Mos of the time, our academy has to help them. I heard they’ve even been borrowing money lately.”
I thought of something and glanced at Stick.
He might look careless, but his strength and stamina ranked near the top at the academy.
“Stick,” I said with a fake smile, “didn’t I give you a bounty reward before? You can live comfortably with that money for a lifetime, Where did it go?”

Stick scratched his head and gave an awkward grin. “Well, Cindy, you know how expensive everything is at the Capital. We went shopping together. Bought this, bought that. It went fast.”
“You spent it all?” I raised an eyebrow.
“Not all!” he said quickly. “The majority of it… I sent back to the monastery. Paid off their debts. Bought enough grain and cured meat to last them three years. What I kept, well, it’s really not much.”
I understood. Stick acted carefree, but he cared deeply about those people.
