The moment Reginald departed the hall, the weight in the hall seemed to lift.

“Come here, child.”

I went to him at once and knelt beside her chair, as I had done in years past. I rested my head against his knee like I used to when I was small.

“You must learn to stand your ground,” he said, his fingers brushing lightly through my hair. His voice sounded calm, almost casual, but there was no mistaking the strength behind it. “You may be part of the royal family now, but never forget, you are the Alpha of Silverpeak. If anyone treats you unjustly, do not bear it in silence. Send word to Moonridge. We may be ld, but we still have the power to tear down a house if we must.”

My throat tightened. “I understand, Professor,” I murmured sweetly.

“And-”

Selvaryn suddenly reached out and flicked the tip of my nose.

“Ouch!” I covered it and looked up at him, eyes watering

“That’s your punishment,” he said, annoyed but not truly angry. “Punishment for keeping things to yourse Punishment for pushing us away. When your family fell apart, why didn’t you reach out right away? You carried it alone for three years. Were you out of your mind?”

I lowered my head. A flash of pain crossed my eyes, the disappeared.

“I won’t do that again,” I said softly.

He sighed and pulled me up so I was sitting beside him.

His face turned serious. There was a worn look in his eyes, the kind that comes from living through too much.

“Cindy, Adam seems like a decent kid. His character is better than James’s. I believe he truly loves you right now. But…”

He lowered his voice so only a few of us could hear. “Alpha males are born with strong instincts. The need to conquer and possess is in their blood. When they love you, they love you fiercely. They would rip out their heart and hand it to you. But once they feel they’ve won you, that fire can cool as time passes. A new she- wolf may catch their eye. That’s instinct. It’s hard to con rol with reason alone.”

He looked at me carefully. “You need to keep an eye on him. Don’t trust him fully like you did with James. Always keep something in your hand. Always leave yourself a way out.”

Toast, who had been silent until now, cut in in a cold tone, “Men are trouble. Every single one.”

Viola nearly spit out her water. She turned and laughed Toast, you’re a man yourself. And you’re scolding yourself?”

Toast kept a straight face and said righteously, “This is exactly why I don’t get close to other men. I only make friends with women. Women value feelings. Menre fickle. That’s an eternal truth.”

Everyone burst into laughter. The heavy mood broke at once.

“Alright, enough,” Dross said, tapping the table to quiets. “We leave for Moonridge tomorrow. Tons of problems waiting at the academy. Say what you need to say. Cindy still needs to visit her family graves. Let’s not keep her.”

At that, everyone gathered around me.

One patted my head. Another pinched my cheek. Each person gave advice and blessings.

“Cindy, take this protective ‘charm. Dross charged it with wolf power.”

“If you start missing the cafeteria’s food, write to me. I’ll ship you some.”

“Stop acting tough. If Queen Isabella gives you trouble, et Adam handle it.”

So many words. In the end, they all meant the same thing: if anything happens, remember to reach out to us. We will always be your family.

Fern stepped forward and pulled me into a tight hug.
