Cindy’s POV:

“And another thing,” Margaret said, her voice sharp. “You’ve stayed in the capital for quite a while now. When are you going back to your pack? You are the Lur of your pack. You can’t stay in your mother’s house forever. If you don’t go back soon, that old hag will start complaining.”
I heard the harsh scrape of a knife against a plate. Lily was cutting her steak far too hard. The metal screeched against porcelain.
“Hmph! Don’t even mention that witch,” Lily snapped. Just thinking about her gets on my nerves. Tracy is unbearable. She always treats me coldly, always looking down her nose like she’s better than everyone else. She carries herself as if she’s so important. If it weren’t for her son, I swear I’d slip some wolfsbane into her soup and get rid of her. Then I wouldn’t have to see her face every single day.”
Smack!
A slap echoed through the great hall.
“Idiot!” Margaret scolded. “Is that something you say out loud? If you poisoned her and people found out, even I couldn’t protect you! Tracy may be irritating, but she comes from a powerful family. Get rid of those foolish, cruel thoughts. If you want someone gone, there are better ways to do it. Poison is the lowest and easiest method to expose.”
“I-I know, Mother. I was just venting,” Lily said, her voie small and hurt.
I pulled my hearing back and slowly opened my eyes. There was only cold mockery in them.
“What did you hear, Cindy?” Diana asked inside my mind with a sneer. “Were that mother and daughte plotting against us?”
“No,” I said calmly, setting down my cup. A cold smile curved my lips. “I heard Lily’s idea of treating her mother-in-law well.” That mother and daughter were rotten from the inside out.
We waited in the salon for nearly an hour. Isabella kept shifting in her seat, unable to sit still. She twisted her handkerchief so tightly it was on the verge of tearing. Just as she seemed ready to pace a path into the carpet, the door finally opened.
Margaret and Lily walked in, followed by a group of attendants.
Margaret wore a silk robe and held a glass of red wine. When her eyes swept over us, there was a look of careless arrogance, as if she were granting us a favor just by showing up. But when her gaze landed on the chests, she paused. A flicker of doubt crossed her snake-like eyes.
She knew Isabella too well. If Isabella had come bearing gifts, everything would have been packed in elegant velvet boxes. Not in heavy wooden chests that looked ol and plain.
“Your Highness, Lady Lily. Good evening,” I said, rising my feet and giving a polite noble bow with a pleasant smile,
Lily clearly did not have her mother’s sharp instincts.
She hurried over to Isabella and looked down at her from above. Isabella was still sitting on the sofa, her shoulders slightly drawn in; she looked scared,

“Well, Aunt Isabella,” Lily said with a fake laugh, covering her mouth. Her tone dripped with mockery. “It’s quite late for a visit. I heard you made quite a scene here earlier. So what’s with all these boxes? Are you here to apologize to my mother?” She tilted her head and smiled sweetly. “You didn’t have to go through so much trouble. My mother is very generous. As long as you’re sincere and stop listening to certain… brats, the doors of Crystal Palace will still be open to you.”
She kept saying “brat.” She might as well have pointed straight at me.
Isabella’s face turned pale with anger at the mockery. She glanced at me without thinking, her eyes full of helplessness.
