The moment we stepped out of the Crystal Palace, a sharp winter wind hit my face. Snow flurries blew straight at us. The cold air swept away the heavy, sickening luxury we had just left behind.

“They’re out! They’re out!”

Martha had been waiting at the entrance the whole time Her voice shook with excitement.

I looked up. Under a streetlamp not far away stood a tall black warhorse. It snorted and pawed at the snowy ground.

Adam sat on its back. He wore only light clothing, and his cloak wasn’t even fastened properly.

The dim yellow light fell across his sharp profile. When his golden eyes found me, they lit up at once.

He had been waiting in the freezing wind for a long time.

“Adam!”

I hurried down the steps.

He swung off the horse and crossed the distance in a few quick strides.

He looked me over from head to toe, his eyes scanning for any sign of injury. Once he was sure I was unharmed, he finally let out a long breath.

“What took you so long?” His voice was hoarse. His brows were slightly furrowed. “I was about to storm in there with my men.”

I reached for his hand.

It was freezing.

His fingers felt like blocks of ice. He had clearly been standing in that bitter wind for more tha

“Are you crazy?” I scolded softly, my heart aching. “It’s so freezing out here. Why didn’t you wait carriage? You couldn’t put on more clothes?” Without thinking, I wrapped both my hands around h to warm him with my heat.

Adam watched me fuss over him, and a warm smile cured his lips. “I wanted you to see me the moment you came out,” he said softly. “And I’m not cold. The moment I saw you walk out safe and sound, I felt warm all over.”

“You’re such a smooth talker.” I glared at him, but my heart melted anyway. “Get in the carriage now. Go warm up.”

I dragged him into the large royal carriage.

Inside, Isabella sat across from us. She held the bearer bonds and property deeds close to her chest. The stack was worth a fortune,

Tonight, she got her money back and tore off Margaret disguise. She looked like she might float away from happiness.

When Isabella saw me pull Adam into the carriage andub his hands to warm him, her smile grew even wider. She was practically glowing.
