A sudden burst of noise exploded outside the camp. Horses screamed in panic. Something heavy slammed into the ground with a deep thud.

“Who goes there? You dare break into the camp!” a guard shouted. His voice was cut off by a sharp, cracking blast.

Crack!

The sound was crisp and clear. A second later came the roar of stone breaking apart.

Adam’s face changed. His hand flew to his sword as he moved to rush forward.

I reached out and stopped him. I smiled. “Relax. It’s my people. They just have a loud way of saying hello.”

We hurried to the gate.

The huge stone block that had been placed in the road as a barrier was gone. Not pushed aside-smashed. It lay shattered into fine rubble across the ground.

Dust filled the air. Through that cloud stood four figures, backlit by the rising sun. Each of them gave off a pressure so strong it made ordinary werewolves struggle to breathe.

At the front stood a woman in red.

She was bold and striking, with long auburn hair tied loosely behind her head. In her hand was a dark crimson whip.

It looked like it had been made from the spine of some dread beast, lined with sharp barbs that glinted faintly like dried blood.

Viola Silva raised a brow. “So this is how the Southreach Army treats guests?” She flicked her wrist as the whip coiled back around her waist like a living thing. Her voice was clear and sharp. “We come to help, and you make us fill out enlistment forms? I don’t read paperwork. I only read kill counts.”

Behind her stood three young werewolves, each just as dangerous.

On the left was a giant of a man, built like a steel tower. He carried two massive battle axes, each nearly as tall as a man. His name was Forrest Lane, nickname Toast.

The name sounded harmless, but his wolf spirit was a mutated Direbear Wolf. His defense was terrifying.

On the right was a lean man holding a solid iron staff. A piece of grass hung from the corner of his mouth, and he looked half asleep. That was Tyrone Dunn; we called him Stick. He was the academy’s top close- combat fighter. With that staff, he could crush even the hardest skull.

The last one stayed in the shadows. A slim young man quietly turning two short daggers in his hands. That was Sterling Pena.

He moved so fast the eye could barely follow. A born assassin.

“Viola!” I called.

Her smug, fierce expression was gone the instant she saw me.

“Cindy!”

She rushed forward like a red storm.

Soldiers around us panicked and raised their spears, but she ignored them completely.

She grabbed me in a crushing hug.

“I can’t breathe,” I said, pushing free, though my chest felt warm. “But you’re here. That’s enough.”

“So these are the psychos you mentioned?” Adam stepped forward, his eyes moving between the shattered stone and Viola. Shock flashed in his gaze.

I turned slightly. “Let me introduce you. This is Viola Silva, captain of the academy combat division. Bad temper. Fast whip. The three behind her are academy elites too. The five of us were once known as the troublemaker squad, the group that gave instructors the worst headaches.”

Tyrone spat out the grass and gave a lazy bow. “Pleasure, Your Highness.” The movement was casual, but his pride was impossible to miss.

Adam took a deep breath. His face lit up with pure joy.

These weren’t troublemakers. They were four elites dropped straight from the sky.

“It is an honor for the Southreach Army to have you,” Adam said at once, taking on a respectful tone. “I’ll have the best tents prepared and assign you as captains-”

“Hold it!” Viola raised a hand and cut Adam off.

She glanced at the recruits around us, who were watching with open envy. Her chin lifted slightly, showing the wild pride of a young werewolf.

“We don’t care about empty titles,” she said. “Academy people hunt their own food.”

She pointed at the three behind her, then at me.

“If we join, we join as regular soldiers. Just give us a unit called the Spearhead Squad. That’s good enough

for us.”

Forrest added in his low, rumbling voice, “Yeah. We’re here to take heads. I heard a Vampire Count is worth 500 crystal coins. A Marquis goes for 2,000. I need to save up to get married.”

From the shadows, Sterling spoke coldly, “I don’t need money. I want their blood cores. They’re the best whetstones there are.”
