When we walked out of the palace gates, the sky was just starting to turn pale. Dawn was coming.
The wind was cold, but I couldn’t feel it on my skin. What I felt was bone-chilling cold.
“Have you lost your mind?” I grabbed Evelyn’s arm and lowered my voice, almost shouting. “Deadmarsh? People will die if we go that way. And there’s no way we can make it in five days-”
“Do you have a better plan?” Evelyn shook my hand off. Her face twisted, and the weak, gentle look she once wore was gone. “The old woman is about to die! We don’t even have enough crystal coins to buy medicine for her! At the Royal Court, everyone points at us. Even the lowest Omegas dare to roll their eyes at us when we buy food!”
She stepped closer. Her eyes were full of jealousy and hate. “And Cindy is there,” she said sharply. “She’s the hero. A prophet. If she saves Southreach, we’ll be under her shadow forever. James, can you accept that? Can you stand being crushed by the woman you cast away?”
“She’s not doing this to beat us,” I said weakly. “She’s actually trying to save people.” Something inside my chest ached as I spoke.
“Save people? Don’t make me laugh.” Evelyn sneered. “She’s playing tricks. Stepping back so she can move forward. She wants your attention. She wants you to regret it. This is her revenge.” Her voice rose, sharp and frantic. “I’ll prove it to her. I am the real general on the battlefield. I’m 10,000 times better than her! Only I can save Southreach!”
I stared at the woman in front of me. Her face was twisted. Her thoughts were a mess. A wave of disgust and strangeness hit me.
This was the true love I had betrayed my bond for? This was the heroic woman I once admired on the battlefield?
Right now, she looked more like a gambler who had lost everything and refused to stop.
“Let’s go,” I said quietly, lowering my head. I didn’t argue. Deep inside, Kenzi let out a faint sigh in its sleep.
There was no turning back now.
Whether for the survival of my pack or for that ridiculous thing called pride, this poison-we had no choice but to swallow it.
Deadmarsh lived up to its name.
There was no wind here. Only the sickening smell of rot.
Gray-green fog clung to the surface of the water, drifting slowly like something alive, ready to swallow anyone who stepped into it.

“Damn it! The cart with the silver bullets is sinking! Get over here, now!”
A soldier’s shout rang out from the front.

I stumbled forward through the mud. Every step was uneven. The thick muck sucked at my boots, forcing me to burn strength just to move.
We were werewolves. We could have shifted into wolf form and run. But this army of over 100,000 carried supplies, food, and heavy crates of silver-coated bullets made to fight vampires. None of that could transform with us.
So, we stayed human. We pushed loaded wagons through a land where even birds refused to land.
“How much farther?” I wiped mud from my face and turned to the guide beside me-a rogue Evelyn had bought with a fortune.
