James stopped in front of me. He was breathing hard, his eyes filled with emotion.

“Cindy, why?” His voice was hoarse. “Why did you never show this before? Your ability, your strategy, your wolf spirit… If you had told me sooner how strong you were, maybe I…”

“Maybe you would not have married Evelyn?” I cut in, smirking with contempt. “James, you are a fraud. You did not marry Evelyn because she is strong. You married her because she fed your pride, because she made you feel like the Alpha in control. If I had shown too much strength, you would have felt threatened.”

“No! That’s not it!” James exploded. “I thought you were just a noble she-wolf who needed protection. I thought you wanted a quiet life. I didn’t want you dragged into bloodshed and fighting…”

“That’s what you believed.” My tone stayed even. “I married you because it was my mother’s last wish. She feared I would die on the battlefield like my father and brothers, so she forced me to restrain myself and live as a proper Luna. I promised her. So I gave way, I concealed, myself. That never meant I was weak.”

I met his eyes and spoke clearly and firmly, “I never wanted to compete with Evelyn for status. It was you who broke the destined bond and the oath. You crushed my dignity under your feet and forced me to draw my blade.”

James went rigid.

“For… your mother’s wish?” he murmured. “So toward me… you truly have no feelings at all?”

“Feelings?” I laughed. “James, do you deserve them? From the day we met until the year after our bond, did you ever care about me even once? Do you know what I like to eat? Do you know if I’m happy at Moonwhisper Residence? You do not. You only know war. You only know your own glory. When you returned, the first thing you gave me was betrayal, then you told me to be generous and step aside. Is that your idea of love?”

“I…” James turned pale and could not speak.

“You never loved me.” My voice turned icy. “You loved an illusion that obeyed you and depended on you. When that illusion shattered and became someone stronger than you, you felt hollow and full of regret. That’s not love. It’s selfishness.”

“Cindy! You are talking nonsense!”

A piercing scream tore out from the trees.

Evelyn rushed out, hair disheveled, pointing at me like someone unhinged. “You are lying! You have been deceiving the Alpha all along! You had power but pretended to be weak just to watch an Alpha make a fool of himself! Feeling pleased now? You have him wrapped around your finger and full of regret, this is what you wanted, right? You sneaky, scheming bitch!”

She lunged at my face, but I stepped aside.

“Evelyn, enough!” James grabbed her and pulled her back, his face dark with anger. “Don’t make a scene here!”

“I’m making a scene?” Evelyn stared at him in disbelief, tears pouring down. “Alpha, you are taking her side? We’re husband and wife! Are you really going to abandon me and crawl back to her?”

Smack!

James’ hand struck across Evelyn’s cheek.

“Shut up!” he shouted, shaking with fury. “Look at yourself! You’re acting like a street shrew!”

Evelyn clutched her face in shock, then let out a shrill scream. “James! You hit me? You hit me for this tramp? Fine! Fine! You two are nothing but a filthy pair…”

I watched their chaos unfold, and all I felt was deep disgust and weariness.

Was this the man I once planned to trust for life? Was this supposed to be true love?

It was ugly.
