The table for two was empty. Elias was gone.
A sense of unease crept over Genevieve. Before she could speak, she heard Hawk say, "I'm sorry, Miss Vale, but Mr. Shawn was called away on urgent business."
Genevieve's smile was stiff. "That's impossible, Assistant Hawk. You must be joking…"
It was her birthday. Elias had never missed it before, no matter how busy he was. He would never just leave her here alone.
"Miss Vale." Hawk's gaze was flat and emotionless, cutting her off.
Meeting his eyes, the smile on Genevieve's face froze completely.
"Mr. Shawn asked me to wish you a happy birthday on his behalf. This is his gift to you. Also…" Hawk handed her a shopping bag. "Mr. Shawn said not to worry about the news online. He's already had the photos taken down."
Genevieve's heart sank. She immediately pulled out her phone and clicked on the link from earlier.
A pop-up appeared instantly—
[We're sorry, this content has been deleted.]
How could this be…
Hawk left after delivering his message. Genevieve sat at the table, staring at the limited-edition handbag. Her hands balled into fists, nails biting into her palms.
A waiter approached. "Miss Vale, shall I bring out the cake now—"
"Get out!"
Bang!
Genevieve yanked the handbag from its bag and hurled it to the floor. Her eyes were bloodshot as she screamed, "All of you, get out!"
The waiter's face paled, and he turned and fled as if his life depended on it.
"Why! Why!" Genevieve's chest heaved as she stared at the mess on the floor.
She had finally waited for him to divorce Victoria. Why was he still avoiding her?
He had never cared about those trending photos before, never stopped them. Why was he in such a hurry to have them removed this time?
Could he have actually fallen in love with that bitch Victoria?
Was he afraid the photos would give Victoria the wrong idea?
No, she would not allow it!
Elias was hers, and hers alone. *Victoria, don't you dare think you can steal the title of Mrs. Shawn from me again!*
Genevieve narrowed her eyes, studying him, as if trying to gauge his honesty.
"You'd better be telling the truth. If I find out you're lying—" Seeing that his panicked fear didn't seem feigned, she relaxed slightly. She stood up, walked over to him, and warned coldly, "I'll make your life a living hell."
The waiter repeated his assurances, trembling, "I-I really didn't see anything."
Genevieve scoffed and hurried away.
Only after she disappeared from the restaurant entrance did the waiter finally let out a shaky breath and collapse onto the floor.
Genevieve left the restaurant and grabbed the first cab she saw, heading straight back to her apartment.
As soon as she got the door open, another AirDrop request flashed across her screen. She tapped “Accept,” and two short clips started playing on their own.
They were a little grainy from compression, but not nearly enough to hide who the couple was—two naked bodies tangled up on a bed, moving in a way that left no room for imagination.
Her and Henry.
Those two clips, and the photos from earlier, were all of her and Henry.
Genevieve stared, her breathing turning shallow and uneven. Her fingers were trembling so badly that she almost missed the screen as she pulled that number out of her blocked list and hit call.
The second the line connected, she snapped, voice rising, “Henry, why do you have those photos and videos? What the hell are you playing at?”
