For a moment, Victoria realized the little girl actually seemed shy.
Victoria was speechless. So she was a little flirt. And here I was, trying to comfort her for so long.
"Are you just going to stand there?" Elias's deep voice cut through her thoughts. When she looked up, she saw he had already started walking with the little girl in his arms.
Victoria paused for a second, then picked up her bag, stood, and followed him.
The path from the side garden to the information desk wasn't long. The whole way, Victoria intentionally kept a couple of steps behind Elias, following him in silence.
A gentle breeze rustled through the trees, causing a yellowed leaf to drift down and land on Elias's broad shoulder.
The little girl had fallen asleep in his arms.
Victoria watched them, and for a fleeting moment, she was lost in a daze.
Three months ago, when she had just found out she was pregnant, she had imagined a scene just like this—a family of three, living a peaceful life.
A sharp stab went through Victoria's chest.
She dropped her gaze, her hand drifting to her abdomen as grief flickered across her face.
Soon, they arrived at the information desk.
The area was bustling with people coming and going. The volunteers at the desk were busy directing patients. Victoria stood to the side, looking for an opportunity to speak.
Suddenly—
"My baby!"
A frantic figure rushed out of the crowd. Without a word, she lunged to take the little girl from Elias's arms. But he was too tall and too quick, and she missed.
"My baby! Give me back my baby!" the woman screamed, trying to rush forward again.
The area was crowded, and Elias's tall, broad frame was less agile than the small woman's.
Victoria quickly stepped in front of him. "Ma'am…"
The woman's only focus was her child. Seeing Victoria block her way, she immediately assumed they were kidnappers. "That's my child! What… what are you trying to do! Give her back to me!"
Then, she yelled at the top of her lungs, "Someone help! Kidnappers! They're kidnappers, they're stealing my child!"
At her words, the crowd turned and swarmed around Victoria and Elias, trapping them.
Everything happened so fast.
Before Victoria could even react, she looked at the woman's red-rimmed, irrational eyes and opened her mouth to explain.
"We're not—"
Victoria frowned.
If the mother was telling the truth, it really didn't make sense—a child that little shouldn't have been able to wander all the way to the inpatient wing alone.
"I'm not lying. If we were really kidnappers, why would we bring your child here instead of just leaving? This is the information desk, it's full of people—"
"How should I know what you kidnappers are thinking!" the woman's sharp voice cut her off.
Victoria fell silent—not because she felt guilty, but because she could tell the woman, in this state, wasn't going to listen to a word she said.
Just then, the crowd parted.
Someone led several uniformed security guards through the throng. Soon, they were standing in front of Victoria, and the person pointed at her, saying, "Officers, it's them. Arrest them!"
The security captain's sharp gaze assessed them both. "You may look respectable, but that doesn't mean you can break the rules. Take them to the security office and call the police."
At his command, the guards behind him moved forward.
Victoria glanced around. They were completely surrounded, with no room to escape.
Just as a guard reached out to grab her—
"Who dares touch her!"
