The flowers he had sent were being carried out of the Design Institute by a strange woman.
The woman walked straight to a trash can.
A second later, the bouquet of pink roses was tossed inside like garbage, without a moment's hesitation.
Elias's face instantly darkened.
Hawk, sitting in the passenger seat, felt a sudden chill run down his spine. Seeing the flowers—which his boss had intended as an apology for not believing Victoria on the day they were supposed to get their divorce certificate—thrown away like that, his own expression changed. Only one thought remained in his mind.
We're screwed.
An eerie silence filled the car, radiating a chill colder than the air outside.
After a long moment, Hawk's heart trembled. "Mr. Shawn, where are we—"
Before he could finish his sentence, his phone rang.
Hawk glanced at the caller ID and answered.
A moment later, he hung up with a grave expression and turned to Elias. "Mr. Shawn, Miss Vale fainted at her family's home."
Elias's dark eyes narrowed. After a moment of silence, he said, "Go to the Vale family's home."
***
Ever since Genevieve Vale's parents learned that Elias and Victoria had signed divorce papers, they had stopped pressuring Genevieve to invite Elias over for dinner.
But as the days turned into weeks, nearly two months had passed.
Elias showed no intention of visiting the Vale family to make a formal proposal. Mr. Vale, already frustrated with his company's recent business struggles, grew increasingly impatient until he finally snapped. He summoned Genevieve back home and demanded an explanation.
Genevieve could only say that it would be soon, but Mr. Vale, desperate for a capital injection, wasn't buying her excuses.
The argument escalated, and Mr. Vale slapped Genevieve hard across the face.
She stumbled into a vase and fell to the ground, unconscious.
By the time Elias arrived, the Vales had already cleaned up the mess and moved Genevieve to her room, pretending as if nothing had happened.
"Mr. Shawn, you're here! Why didn't you let us know you were coming? Please forgive our poor hospitality!" Mr. Vale greeted Elias with a fawning smile.
Elias's face was devoid of expression. "Where's Gen?"
Mr. Vale's smile froze for a second. "Gen… she wasn't feeling well after she got here today…"
"Mr. Vale, I'm not a patient man."
A chill went down Mr. Vale's back. He quickly stammered, "She's… she's in the upstairs bedroom. Mr. Shawn, I'll take you up."
"No need." Elias's tone was icy. He glanced at Hawk. "Hawk, go up."
With that money, The Vale Group would be saved!
Gallagher's eyes lit up as he immediately took the card. Only then did he ask, "Mr. Shawn, what is this for?"
"You've raised Gen for all these years. Consider this money payback for everything you ever spent on her." Elias said, his gaze cold. "Take this money, and from this day forward, the Vale family will have nothing more to do with Gen."
Gallagher was stunned.
He never imagined that Elias would offer three hundred million dollars just to sever Genevieve's ties with their family.
Before, when Elias was still married and Genevieve's future as Mrs. Shawn was uncertain, Gallagher would have accepted the money without a second thought.
But now, with Elias on the verge of being divorced and willing to spend such a large sum to cut her ties, it was clear how important Genevieve was to him. Once she became Mrs. Shawn, she would be an invaluable asset to the Vale family.
Gallagher handed the bank card back to Elias, his voice full of righteous indignation. "Mr. Shawn, although we adopted Gen, after all these years together, she is already family. To ask us to sever our relationship with her for money… I can't possibly agree. Gen is my daughter."
"Is that so?" Elias glanced at the card but didn't take it.
His stare made Gallagher nervous. He swallowed hard and insisted, "Yes."
"Fine. If you won't take the money, suit yourself." With that, Elias took back the card.
Gallagher watched those three hundred million slip through his fingers, his chest twisting with regret even as a strange flicker of relief lingered underneath.
But then, Elias's voice sounded again…
