The message was from the prison, reminding her that her three-month visitation window was tomorrow.
Although Garnett Sanger was on medical parole, family members were still granted visitation rights. The only difference was that the cold, enclosed room was replaced by a sterile white hospital room that smelled of disinfectant.

The next morning, Victoria put on some light makeup and drove to the secure wing of Metropolitan General Hospital.
After checking her documents and verifying her identity, the guard quickly granted her entry. "You have thirty minutes for the visit. Keep an eye on the time."
"Thank you." Victoria put her ID away and looked up toward the floor where Garnett's room was.
A few minutes later, she was standing outside his room.
Through the small window on the door, she could clearly see the back of a middle-aged man sitting on the edge of the bed, waiting quietly. A heavy, suffocating knot tightened in her chest.
She had prepared herself for this, mentally rehearsing everything on the way over.
But now, standing right outside the door, Victoria felt the urge to retreat.
She was afraid...
She was afraid she wouldn't be able to control her emotions. Afraid of the look of disappointment on Garnett's face when he realized his son wasn't with her. And most of all, she was afraid that when he asked where Grady was, her answer wouldn't sound natural enough, and he would sense that something was wrong.
"Victoria? Is that you?" Inside the room, Garnett turned his head, caught a glimpse of the figure outside the small window, and got up to walk over.
Victoria composed herself, pushed the door open, and forced a smile. "Dad."
Garnett's face lit up with undisguised joy when he saw it was really her. He hurried forward and grasped her by the shoulders. "You look worn out. And you've lost weight."
Victoria pulled his hands off her shoulders and linked her arm through his. "No, I haven't. I've definitely gained weight. You must be seeing things, Dad."
"You're my daughter. How could I be wrong about that?" Garnett said, his voice laced with concern as he led her to a chair. "Is work too hard? If you're too tired, you can always find another job. Or come back to the company and let your brother look after you. You're the Sanger family's little princess; we can't have you suffering..."
After a moment, she managed a weak smile. "Don't worry, Dad. He... he already has a girl he cares about."
"I have a daughter-in-law?" Garnett's eyes lit up.
Victoria shifted, leaning against her father's shoulder to hide her expression. "Not yet. But the first time I saw her, I could just tell that he treated her differently. He hasn't admitted it, but... I think he has feelings for her."
"That's my boy!" Garnett laughed. "It looks like the Sanger family will have a new generation soon!"
"I was worried that blockhead of a son of mine, who only knows how to work, would never be able to attract a girl or take the initiative! I was planning on setting him up on dates the minute I get out of here next year! I can't believe the kid finally got a clue!"
"By the way, what do you think of her? I told your brother a long time ago that it doesn't matter if I approve of the woman he marries. What matters is that our little princess likes her."
A mist formed in Victoria's eyes. She opened her mouth to speak, but a thick lump in her throat made it impossible to form words.
Garnett waited for a moment, but when he heard no reply, he murmured a questioning, "Hmm?" and looked down at her.
