Mrs. Prescott was stunned, not expecting that answer.
"What do you want with Abbey? You've already harmed our Tamara, are you going to harm Abbey too?!" Mr. Prescott's brow furrowed, his face instantly darkening as his eyes filled with suspicion.
"Mr. Prescott, please don't misunderstand. I have no intention of causing trouble for Abbey," Victoria quickly explained.
Mr. Prescott snorted, clearly unconvinced.
Seeing this, Mrs. Prescott tugged on her husband's sleeve. "Calm down. It might not be what you think. Let's hear Miss Sanger out first."
At his wife's urging, Mr. Prescott glanced at Victoria and fell silent, though his expression remained tense.
Victoria considered her words before speaking slowly. "I only heard about what happened to Tamara after I arrived. It was… a shock to me as well, but please believe me, Mr. and Mrs. Prescott, I mean no harm. I came here because there are some things I need to ask her."
With that, Victoria pushed herself up from the armchair and addressed them with earnest respect. "Please, let me see Abbey."
Mrs. Prescott quickly helped her back to her seat, her mouth opening and closing as if she wanted to say something but couldn't.
Victoria saw her hesitation and added, "I know what you're worried about. I won't do anything to hurt Abbey. I'm begging you."
"Well…" Mrs. Prescott looked back at her husband's displeased face, then turned to Victoria. "Miss Sanger, you said you have questions for Abbey. Could you tell me what they are? Perhaps I can ask her for you."
"A little over two weeks ago, my brother died in a car accident." Victoria's lips pressed into a thin line as she fought to control her emotions, her voice growing hoarse. "Abbey was my brother's intern secretary. She was also the last person he saw on the day he left the capital."
The color drained from Mr. and Mrs. Prescott's faces.
"Are you suggesting Abbey was involved in your brother's accident?" Mrs. Prescott's eyes widened, and she took two steps back, immediately denying it. "Impossible! Abbey would never hurt anyone!"
"She's been introverted and kind since she was a child. She wouldn't even hurt a fly, let alone harm a living person."
Mrs. Prescott's eyes reddened, and her voice trembled as she spoke. "But… but we don't know where she is either."
Mr. Prescott's tone was heavy. "Abbey and Tamara were both reserved, but Abbey was more independent than her sister. After she got into the university, she rarely contacted us, except to occasionally send back some money she'd earned from part-time jobs. We only just found out she was interning at the Sanger Group…"
Victoria's heart sank. "When was the last time you were in contact with her?"
"Yesterday," Mrs. Prescott replied.
Mr. Prescott looked at Victoria with a complicated expression and added, "To be precise, we started calling Abbey the day Tamara passed away, but her line was always busy."
"Later, Abbey sent a text saying she was on a business trip out of town and couldn't take calls. We figured she had just graduated and couldn't be distracted, so we kept Tamara's death from her."
"When I saw you yesterday, Tamara's mother got very anxious. We tried calling Abbey again, but she didn't answer…"
