Just as their lips were about to meet, Elias lowered his gaze, pulled her hands down, and turned his head away.
His expression was impassive as he repeated, "Gen, you're drunk."
"Why... why are you doing this..." The hope in Genevieve's eyes shattered. A thought occurred to her, and she asked through her sobs, "Is it because of Victoria?"
At the mention of Victoria's name, Elias's brow furrowed.
Seeing his reaction, Genevieve gave a bitter laugh and stumbled back two steps, looking as if she might collapse. "So it really is because of her? You... you've actually fallen in love with her? No, that's impossible!"
Seeing she was about to fall, Elias reached out to steady her.
"Elias, tell me you haven't fallen in love with someone else, please? There must be another reason for this. You're afraid your grandfather will threaten me again like he did two years ago, right?" Genevieve clung to him as if he were her last hope, desperate for confirmation.
Just then, Hawk arrived and opened the dining room door from the outside.
"Mr. Shawn."
"Gen, you've been drinking. We'll talk when you've calmed down." Elias pulled Genevieve's hands off him and turned to leave.
Genevieve couldn't believe that even after she had humbled herself and pleaded, Elias remained unmoved. As he started to walk away, she cried out in desperation, "But Victoria already divorced you!"
Elias stopped dead in his tracks.
With red-rimmed eyes, Genevieve walked in front of him. "Elias, you and Victoria are from two different worlds. She... she used so many despicable tactics just to save The Sanger Group and hold onto her title as Mrs. Shawn. You said it yourself, you hate it when people manipulate you."
"Besides, if it weren't for her, we wouldn't have been separated two years ago. Elias, I'm divorced, and you're divorced. If we get together now, everything can go back to how it was supposed to be."
Genevieve's face turned deathly pale. She forced a smile and muttered, "No, that's not it. I know, you just haven't realized what's in your own heart yet. It's okay, it's okay. We still have time. We can take it slow—"
"Gen!" Elias cut her off sharply, his voice firm and certain. "From the very beginning, we were never together. In the past, when you were vague about our relationship to others, I didn't care, but that didn't mean I was agreeing with you. I told you this before. You should be well aware of it."
"So, two years ago, even if Victoria hadn't been in the picture, we still wouldn't have gotten together."
Hawk, standing nearby, was stunned. So, Mr. Shawn and Genevieve had never officially been a couple?
Then... the common belief that Victoria had been the one to interfere was nothing but baseless gossip? If they were never together, how could they have been forced apart?
Her carefully constructed charade was now ruthlessly exposed. Genevieve felt as if her blood had turned to ice. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed into a chair.
Elias watched her with an indifferent expression for a moment before turning and striding away.
