Victoria stared at the temperature displayed on the ear thermometer, her brow twitching almost imperceptibly.
102.7 degrees.
Elias’s fever hadn't gone down at all. In fact, he had been working all morning with a dangerously high temperature.
"Cough, cough… I'm fine. I'll just take some medicine," Elias said, glancing at the number on the screen and coughing on cue.
A vein throbbed in Victoria's temple. Medicine wouldn't do a thing if he didn't rest.
The doorbell rang.
Victoria opened it to find Hawk standing outside, holding two more file folders.
He said, "Miss Sanger, I'm sorry to bother you, but there are two urgent approval forms that need Mr. Shawn's signature. If you could just—"
Bang!
Before he could finish, Victoria slammed the door in his face.
Elias, who had heard Hawk's voice from the sofa, started to get up.
"Sit down," Victoria snapped, her voice sharp with an anger she didn't fully understand. She gathered all the files and the tablet from the coffee table and marched back to the door.
Outside, Hawk, who had narrowly avoided being hit by the door, felt his heart jump. He was completely baffled.
Before he could figure out what was happening, the lock clicked, and the door opened again.
"Vic—"
He had barely started to speak when Victoria shoved all the documents into his arms. "Hawk," she said, her face cold, "I'm giving you two choices."
"Wh-what?"
"Either take these files and get lost, or take your sickly boss and get lost."
Hawk stumbled back, nearly dropping the tablet. He looked down at the scattered papers, swallowed hard, and had the strange thought that the usually gentle Miss Sanger, when angry…
Bore a striking resemblance to Mr. Shawn.
Assuming it was Hawk coming back for something, Victoria yanked the door open without thinking. "Hawk, what did you forget?"
"Miss Sanger."
Outside stood the Prescotts. The man's voice was hoarse as he greeted her.
Seeing them, Victoria froze, then quickly recovered. "Mr. Prescott, Mrs. Prescott, please, come in."
As the Prescotts entered, they saw Elias and paused. "Miss Sanger, are we interrupting?"
Elias had sat up at some point.
Victoria quickly fabricated a lie. "No, don't mind him. He's… he's just my roommate. He's not feeling well today, just resting at home."
"Oh, I see."
Victoria poured two glasses of water and invited them to sit. "Mr. Prescott, Mrs. Prescott, what brings you here? Did something—"
Abbey's mother's eyes suddenly reddened. She threw herself at Victoria’s feet, her body shaking with sobs.
