Hawk reacted instantly, making a quick call. After a few brief words, he hung up and turned around.
"Mr. Shawn, the family doctor is on his way. He'll be at Miss Vale's place shortly."-
"What... what do I do? I'm so scared... Elias, my baby..." The woman's panicked voice continued to pour from the phone, twisting Elias's heart into a tight knot.
"Gen, don't be afraid," Elias soothed, his voice gentle. "Trust me. You and the baby will be fine."
Hearing her husband, who was always so cold to her, whisper tender words of comfort to another woman made Victoria's heart sink. Her body went rigid, and her eyes began to burn.
So, he could be gentle. Just never with her.
But... Elias, if you knew I had carried your child, too? That your child was gone because of your indifference? Would you feel any regret?
Soon, the sound of a doctor arriving in a hurry could be heard through the phone, mingling with Genevieve's frightened sobs.
After a few moments, the doctor, having finished his examination, took Genevieve's phone. "Mr. Shawn, please rest assured. Miss Vale seems to be experiencing some minor bleeding due to stress. She just needs plenty of bed rest."
Elias's tense brow finally relaxed.
From the passenger seat, Hawk's eyes flickered to the rearview mirror, catching a glimpse of the desolation in Victoria's face. He had been by Elias's side for five years; he knew the whole story between Genevieve, Victoria, and Mr. Shawn.
Genevieve's departure years ago had created the opening for Victoria to marry into the Shawn family. Now that Genevieve was back, it was only a matter of time before Victoria had to give up her position as Mrs. Shawn.
Hawk cleared his throat. "Mr. Shawn, since Miss Vale is alright, should we still head there first?"
"Stop the car," Elias commanded, his voice sharp.
With a screech of tires, the Maybach slammed to a halt on the winding mountain road.
Caught off guard, Victoria lurched forward, her forehead cracking against the back of the passenger seat.
"Get out."
Before she could recover from the impact, Elias's order, wrapped in a deathly chill, hit her.
Her fingers, pressed against her abdomen, tightened. She slowly straightened up and looked out the window.
Left behind, Victoria watched it disappear into the distance.
She hugged her stomach and sank to the ground. The events of the last two days replayed in her mind like a film, frame by agonizing frame.
The pool of blood, the miscarriage, the news report of them standing side by side, Laurel's cruel words, Elias's humiliating revenge...
Each memory was a sharp blade plunging into her heart, only to be twisted and ripped out, leaving a bloody, gaping wound.
"It hurts..."
Her stomach hurt, her forehead hurt, her heart hurt. Every inch of her hurt.
Her eyes burned red, filling with tears. She whispered the word, "hurts," unsure which pain was worse, knowing only that even breathing was an agony.
She crouched there in the dark. She didn't know how much time had passed before the metallic taste of blood rose in her throat. She pulled out her phone, her cold fingers tapping out a single sentence on the screen:
[Elias, let's get a divorce.]
