The driver’s face drained of color, but he stomped on the gas, and the car shot forward.
Inside the Bentley, Tobias glanced at the rearview mirror, his eyes darkening as he saw the Maybach closing in without any sign of slowing down.
"Tobias, you..." The sudden acceleration had startled Victoria. She turned to look at Tobias, only to find his expression grim. "What's happening?"
"It's nothing." Despite his words, Tobias's speed only increased.
Victoria watched the speedometer climb, her mind flashing back to the time Elias had recklessly sped with her, nearly crashing into a truck. The color drained from her face, and she gripped the seatbelt tighter.
Tobias caught her pale expression in his peripheral vision and paused, realizing the speed might have scared her.
"Victoria, don't be afraid."
"Tobias, what's going on?" Victoria's lips pressed into a thin line.
"Someone's following us." Tobias told her the truth when he saw he couldn’t hide it anymore.
Someone was following them? Who?
Victoria looked in the rearview mirror, but the car was moving too fast, her nerves stretched taut. She couldn't make out what kind of car it was. Tobias's gentle voice came from her side.
"Victoria, it's alright. Close your eyes, and you won't be scared."
Victoria tightened her grip, forcing herself to stay calm. No matter who it was, she had to keep a clear head and not distract Tobias!
"Okay," she agreed. Just as she closed her eyes, the Bentley screeched to a halt, the tires screaming against the asphalt.
SCREEECH!
Victoria was thrown forward, then yanked back violently by the seatbelt.
She opened her eyes, her vision blurry for a moment. It took a few seconds to register that a car had stopped directly in front of them, forcing Tobias to slam on the brakes.
"Victoria, are you hurt?" Tobias asked, looking at her with concern.
Victoria stared at the car ahead. The familiar emblem and license plate told her exactly who the owner was—
Elias.
"I'm fine," she said, her expression hardening.
Just then, someone tapped on her window twice. It was Hawk. "Ma'am, Mr. Shawn wants you to come with him."
Victoria looked toward Elias standing beside the Maybach. He was tall and imposing, exuding an air of innate nobility, his features sharp and cold.
The distance was a bit too far for her to see clearly, but she could feel his icy gaze on them, as if he were watching a joke unfold.
She thought about the near-disaster moments ago. If Tobias hadn't braked in time, they could have been seriously injured, or worse, killed.
His hands, hanging by his sides, clenched into fists before he consciously relaxed them and stepped forward.
"Mr. Shawn."
Elias looked at Tobias, a faint smirk on his lips. "Dr. Holt, thank you for going out of your way to drive my wife to her family's home, busy as you are. But her journey from here is covered."
My wife...
Those two words struck a chord in Victoria's heart, flooding it with a complex mix of emotions.
For more than seven hundred days, she had dreamed of hearing those words from his lips, hoping to stand by his side as he introduced her as his wife, Elias Shawn's wife.
She never imagined it would happen only after her heart had already died.
A bitter smile touched Victoria's lips.
"Victoria and I grew up together. It's no trouble at all. Besides, I was already on my way to the Sangers' for dinner. It was on my way."
"Is that so?" Elias's eyes narrowed slightly as he glanced at Victoria. "My wife and I have been married for a while now, and I don't believe I've ever heard her mention you."
Tobias's reply was pointed. "The depth of my relationship with Victoria is something we both understand perfectly well. There's no need to broadcast it."
Elias’s face turned stormy.
