Haco, the sorcerer that had put the cursed soul inside Cane, was currently staring blankly into the distance. He had been throwing tantrums, demanding Clad and Leros let Cane know he wanted to see him, but after his countless failed attempts, he sat down on the floor, shutting down from his surroundings, while mumbling and shaking his head in disbelief about his current situation.
"I am doomed. I am doomed. I cursed a princess. I will be beheaded... they are going to kill me. I am dead now."
Haco didn’t have any idea whose hair that Cane had sent to him belonged to, in the letter, it was only mentioned he wanted the person to suffer, for them to beg for death while they were alive.
Thus, with only one earth stone at his disposal, the strongest black magic he could perform was that curse.
However, Haco wouldn’t have done that if he knew beforehand it was actually Princess Osana’s hair. He wouldn’t be crazy enough to curse a royal family member and get himself killed, after he strived for five decades to get rid of that cursed soul, but apparently, Cane tricked and trapped him in this mess.
On the other hand, it was pretty obvious Cane was well aware of the fact that Haco would refuse, thus he omitted the details carefully in his instructions.
Right now, there was no other way for Haco to survive, aside from clinging onto Cane’s protection and the success of his plan, whatever it was, because if the Alpha was going down, he would get dragged as well. He had tangled his own fate with his from this moment onward.
"Damn you, Cane... you ungrateful brat!"
Meanwhile, Leros just returned from spreading rumors, mingling with people and socialising with them was his forte, he was good with his words and his social skills were outstanding compared to the other spies.
"What happened to him? Something is wrong with his brain?" Leros poured himself a glass of water, as he stared at the sorcerer. This old man looked so pitiful. "Did he get a backlash from using black magic? He doesn’t look sane."
Clad shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly. "Let him be." He had been listening to his rumblings since the news about Princess Osana arrived and Haco confirmed it was him who had done it.
Once they were sure that the black curse worked on the Princess, Leros started spreading the news immediately, imprinting fear in the people of this capital city, creating a huge wave of panic.
They were not sure what happened, but they could feel the Alpha had hastened the plan and became a little bit aggressive and vicious. They were only worried he would be reckless.
"Cane! Damn you!" Haco howled in frustration. Even in his worst nightmares, he had never imagined making himself an enemy of the royal family.
It was almost insignificant, but still, it was a progress.
Iris stared at Cane’s sleeping face and tentatively ran her fingers through his hair, she stopped for a moment, before she did it again, once she was sure she didn’t wake him up. His hair was a little bit rough, showing how stubborn the Alpha was.
He breathed evenly and hugged her a little bit tighter without even him realizing it, and went back to deep sleep.
It was so quiet and peaceful and the dim light of the sun filtered through the window. It must be a bit too cold out there, since the snow didn’t stop falling throughout the night and now, many people were working to clear the roads, so horses or carriages wouldn’t slip in the icy streets.
Iris felt she could stay like this for a whole day, yet her determination was proven wrong once again, because not long after that, she could hear her stomach start grumbling. She was hungry and their breakfast was only a few steps away from them, yet she couldn’t reach it.
Iris tried to pry herself from Cane’s arms that trapped her body, but he didn’t budge. And when she tried a little bit harder, it woke him up instead.
He opened his eyes, on alert.
