"Was it the King who sent you here?" Cane asked. "If you want to find your grandson faster, you need to actively get involved in this case."
As usual, Cane didn’t waste any time by talking in a roundabout manner. He didn’t even let Koda get angry at him first because he had been neglecting his duty for two days, as Iris was sick.
On the other hand, Koda narrowed his eyes, his lips pressed into a thin line. "Do you want to say I didn’t actively get involved enough?"
"Yes."
Koda was stunned by the bluntness that Cane showed to him. Shouldn’t he be apologetic for how he handled the situation? He should beg for his forgiveness! Not only did he ignore the King’s order of going back to the palace, but he actually had the audacity to say he didn’t contribute in this case!
As the former beta of the Red Claw pack, his ego was so high, Koda felt he was being insulted. "Ridiculous!" He slammed his hand on the table, so hard, the water jostled out of the glass, yet Cane didn’t even flinch, he met Koda’s eyes squarely. "You are the one who had been coddling your mate and neglected your duty, you even dared to turn down the summons from the King, but it’s me who didn’t actively get involved?!"
King Aeon was furious when Cane only said his mate was sick and he needed to be with her, as he rejected his summons, but the King couldn’t do anything, since he put all the important responsibility in this critical situation on the Alpha, not to mention the thing that they discussed behind the closed doors about the Asturi Stem and the Celestial Moon pack.
King Aeon was infuriated with the way Cane took advantage of the situation and did things as he pleased.
"You arrived more than a week ago, but what have you done aside from pestering the King to deploy more men? And demanding to make it more public?" Cane looked relaxed, not even once he showed fear when he faced this furious former beta. "Not even once you joined the search team, though you brought your own warriors with you."
"That’s your job to do!" Koda roared. He didn’t like to be blamed.
"And I have done my job."
"By coddling your mate?" Koda scoffed derisively. He didn’t even try to show some respect toward Cane, although he had a higher rank between the two of them, as he was the Alpha. "Are you in a rush to get her pregnant?" He must have heard about the deadline the King had given to Cane.
However, Cane was unfazed in the face of that insult, he still looked so calm when he spoke, but his words were filled with venom. "You are talking to an alpha, the King’s special emissary at that. Insulting me means you are insulting the King as well. I can have you killed right now and the King will not be able to do anything."
"I want to see how you will do it."
"Haven’t you heard about the golden stamp I received?" With the golden stamp, his power was only a second to the King’s himself.
"Do you want to make the whole Red Claw pack your enemy?" Once again, Koda slammed his hand on the table and this produced a visible crack on the surface. Still, it didn’t bother Cane. The Beta stood up and showed his imposing figure.
"Will you believe me if I say the King would be very glad to battle your pack if I gave him an excuse to do so?"
"Nonsense!"
"He lost control over the magic stone mines in the Howling Wolf pack and Blue Moon pack, do you think he doesn’t have his eyes on your pack?" Cane’s lips tugged upward.
"We are the richest pack! Do you really think he can take down our pack easily?!" Koda barked. "You are a slave! You will forever be a slave! You will never understand how the power play in this realm works!"
It was a small and shiny object, a ring.
"What is this?" Koda frowned to see the ring, as he picked it up from the table.
Cane then started his narration. He talked smoothly without any stumbling, as if he was feeding Koda with the truth.
The more the former beta listened to it, the more his face turned darker.
==============================
In the yard, you could hear the sound of children still playing. It was not night yet and they were still full of vigor.
But then, Cane saw something that made his blood boil.
In the middle of the yard, he saw the lazy ass white bear, sprawled on the covered- snow ground, while the children climbed on its big body, laughing happily, yet the creature was too lazy to shake them off.
At this point, it looked more like an overgrown puppy instead of a beast!
But, if this dummy creature was here, he must be here too!
