The parchment in the lizard’s mouth indeed did not burn, it too moved along with the lizard, from one place to another.
Cane lifted the creature with his fingers and stared at it for a while, as his mind went over a lot of possibilities. Suddenly, the value of the lizard increased in his eyes.
"You have done a good job," Cane said, he kissed the tip of her nose gently, which warmed Iris’ heart, so did her face.
After what happened this morning, she was afraid whatever progress they made in this relationship thus far would suffer a setback, but Cane giving her small kisses like this without being awkward made her feel relieved again.
"We need to train the lizard." Cane returned the lizard to Iris and reminded her she needed to keep it with her, out of people’s sight, though because of her recklessness, half of the pack members already knew about the lizard’s existence.
After that, Cane was generous enough to order another plate of meat for the lizard to enjoy, so the creature wouldn’t sulk and hide itself again.
"Sleep, we will go back to the Howling Wolf pack tomorrow," Cane said, as he held Iris in his arms on their bed. It was already past midnight.
At this point, Cane got used to sleeping in a bright room, though he preferred to sleep without any light. Because Iris was afraid of the dark, he adjusted himself.
There was one time when the fire in the fireplace died out and Iris was woken up in the middle of the night, shaking and hyperventilating because of the darkness that surrounded her.
After that, Cane made it a habit to check the firewood in the fireplace before falling asleep, always making sure it was enough for the night.
"How did your conversation go?"
"Everything’s going well," Cane replied. Though Lou was trying to act cool and being a bit difficult in the negotiation earlier, his greediness leaked out from every pore of his skin. All he wanted was benefits and he got a lot of profit from the deal, while Cane made sure to feed his greed constantly, weaving an invisible leash around his neck without him realizing it.
"Will he start to build magic devices?" The original plan was to build magic devices around the Blue Moon pack first, but looking at the change of the situation, of course, the plan should be changed as well.
"Yes, it will take a month or two to complete it. Once it’s done, they can continue digging the tunnel."
Iris’ eyes lit up. Cane had said that it was impossible for him to take any responsibility for other people’s lives, but it didn’t mean he would be completely careless with their lives either.
"Sleep, Iris. We need to wake up early." Cane caressed her earlobe, which made her squirm as she held his hand away from her ear.
"Do I make you uncomfortable?" Iris suddenly asked.
Probably because the night was so quiet and this made both of them become more comfortable and vulnerable, but Iris liked the conversation they had before they fell asleep, as Cane became a little bit open about his own thoughts and feelings.
But then, Iris realized she didn’t know how to bring this matter into a conversation with him... freēwēbnovel.com
With that thought in her mind, Iris fell asleep in her mate’s arms, she had another dream about the five swords and the woman inside the empty hall.
Meanwhile, the people from the Holy Kingdom were less than a month away from the continent.
After a quiet night, the morning came and the first thing Iris realized was that Cane had been up for some time. His side of the bed was cold.
Not long after that, Hanna came into her bedroom to help her prepare for today’s journey back to the Howling Wolf pack. She was talking about Sofia and her worries that the Alpha would take his pregnant mistress’ side, because from what she heard, the people in the Howling Wolf pack had welcomed her warmly.
But, Iris was only paying half attention to that.
While Hanna was worried about Sofia bearing the Alpha’s first child and tried to console Iris over that fact, her missy was worrying about something else entirely, since she knew Sofia was carrying Redmond’s seed, not Cane’s.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the pack house, there was a certain merchant, who was being crabby.
"Damn you, Cane! Damn it!" Lou rushed to the Riverside pack in hopes to see Iris, but when he was finally here, Cane was leaving to the Howling Wolf pack with her.
