"A child wrote to me?" Iris’ eyes lit up when she received the letter. She opened it immediately. It seemed, Cane had not yet read it, since the letter was still sealed.
Inside, Iris found not so nice handwriting, which made her chuckle, even though the handwriting couldn’t be considered acceptable, the letter was clear and not confusing to read.
Because of how big the letters were, it took three parchments to convey a short piece of information.
"What is it?" Cane caught Iris frowning after she read the letter.
"Joyce said Prince Kellan didn’t take her to the palace but he took her sister Annie with him to the Celestial Moon pack after the war against the Red Claw pack." Iris’ eyes darkened. Her mood turned very sour and Cane could feel it.
When she was in the capital city, Joyce would gush how Prince Kellan would take her to the palace, so she could live with her sister there, but now after everything that happened, it seemed, Prince Kellan only took the children who were already under his possession without taking any new ones from the orphanage.
Iris didn’t know whether this was good news or not.
"Hm." Cane nodded. "I got a report that Kellan is in the Celestial Moon pack." At his words, Iris stared at him and he answered the question that she didn’t voice out loud. "The Howling Wolf pack and the Celestial Moon pack were Kellan’s strongest supporters back when he was still a crown prince. It would be easier for him to reach the Celestial Moon pack than the Howling Wolf pack."
Kellan must have fled there since he didn’t have a stronghold in the palace after the untimely death of the King. From what Cane had gathered, Alan had been killing all the princes and princesses, who could challenge him for the throne and sent people to hunt down those who tried to escape.
It was a common practice for new sovereigns when they sat on the throne to paint the palace with blood. This was what Cane’s mother avoided.
It didn’t mean Kellan would be able to escape his death, despite being in the Celestial Moon pack, even though it gave him a chance to survive.
Meanwhile, knowing Alan and the dispute between him and Cane, it was only a matter of time before that stupid man set his eyes on him to destroy his pack. Cane wished for Koda to succeed the throne, but it seemed it wouldn’t happen in the near future.
On the other hand, it was an absolute concern for Cane to strengthen the southern packs before Alan made his first move, for the meantime, he must be busy having fun chasing after all the royal princes and princesses.
"Cane." Iris looked conflicted when she called his name, as he leaned over to let her know that she got all of his attention. He waited for her to speak. "Will you... support Prince Kellan like your father did...?"
Iris was not sure about this, but the Howling Wolf pack and the Celestial Moon pack had a long history together, Cane’s father and Alpha Derick were good friends and both of them supported Prince Kellan in the past.
Therefore, Iris had a mixed feeling about this. However, Cane’s strong answer startled her.
"Over my dead body, Iris." Cane’s voice was so cold and dark. It was not even a question in the first place. There was no way he would support such a damnable person, who held no value whatsoever.
After Iris’ initial surprise with Cane’s vicious answer, she leaned over and rested her head on his chest, seeking comfort. Her emotions were a mess every time the topic of Kellan was brought up.
Seeing how distraught and upset Iris was, Cane caressed her back and hugged her tightly, giving her the comfort and the feeling of protection that she needed.
However, their peaceful moment was disrupted by Lou’s loud voice followed by the warriors, who tried to chase him away from the Alpha and Luna’s carriage.
Cane frowned deeply, he really didn’t have any patience left for this merchant.
"Cane! Come out! I need to talk with you about something important! Come out now!" Just like Cane, Lou’s patience had also run so thin because he couldn’t even have a proper conversation with Iris.
Even so, at the very least, Cane should have a discussion with him, right? They had a handful of deals, but the time where they really talked about their business could be counted on one hand. It would be Jace or other people, who always relayed Cane’s order.
This arrangement irked the merchant.
At the end of the day, he was still a merchant, he looked for profit and couldn’t care less who was sitting on the throne, even though personally in his opinion, Sabian could do a better job as a king than that spoiled Alan.
Well, the result would be tight if you compared Alan with Lil Thing, since both held the same capabilities.
But then, a grin appeared on the corner of his lips. "Unless you have a plan to take over the Moon Dew pack and bring it under your territory as well, I am not going to stand by you." Lou shrugged his shoulders. "I am just saying."
Since Cane could take down all the packs in the south, the merchant thought taking down one more pack in the east wouldn’t be a problem.
"It will be difficult, but it’s not impossible." Cane nodded. "The right aid will be needed to make it happen."
Lou looked ecstatic to see how this alpha complied. It was a rare moment for Cane to be easy to talk with.
"What do you need?" Lou was ready for a long discussion and to delay their departure, but Cane was having none of it.
"I will write you a letter once I come up with an idea," Cane said and then opened the carriage’s door to enter. "Finish building your magical devices here and the tunnel in the Riverside pack, after that, meet me in the Silver River pack."
And with that, Cane closed the door of the carriage, leaving Lou to curse under his breath. "Don’t talk to me like that! I am not one of your workers!"
Inside the carriage, Iris chuckled to hear how frustrated Lou was, as she nestled against Cane’s chest. "I thought you already had a plan for the Moon Dew pack. Why didn’t you tell him about that?"
Cane caressed her head. "Let him think that he is the one who is planning it and he will come up with more ideas. With the resources he has, there is a possibility he will come with a better plan than I do." Cane hugged Iris closely. "More sources are always welcome."
Since everything that had transpired, all of Cane’s plots and schemes were ruined. He needed to think of a way to make the best out of this situation and start from scratch.
