Not because I’d lost it. Because some things deserved space before they were spoken and this was one of them. I’d thought about this moment for a long time without knowing I was thinking about it. Every version of myself that had survived this pack had been moving toward this room and this morning and these words without knowing where they were going.

Now I was here.

You’ll be watched,I said. Not as punishment. As accountability. There’s a difference and I need you to understand it.I looked across the room. Punishment is what happened to me. Accountability is what prevents it from happening to anyone else on this land again.

A woman near the center of the room pressed her lips together.

I held her gaze until she looked down.

The wolves appointed to lead this pack going forward have been chosen because they didn’t participate,” I said. Not because they’re without fault. Because their faults didn’t include deciding that another wolf’s suffering was acceptable.I paused. That’s the standard now. It’s a low one. It shouldn’t be remarkable. But in Ashcrest it is and that’s what this pack has to live with going forward.

Nobody argued.

Nobody tried.

The room had run out of the particular energy that fueled argument and denial. What was left was something quieter and less comfortable. The settling of truth into people who had been avoiding it and now had nowhere left to avoid it to.

I looked at them for one more moment.

I grew up on this land,I said. I know every path and every building and every face in this room. I know what it felt like to be invisible here.I held the room. “You won’t forget what you allowed. I’m not asking you to. I’m asking you to let it be the reason you don’t allow it again.

The room held what I’d said without anyone trying to answer it.

That was how I knew it had landed the way it needed to. Not agreement exactly. Not relief. The particular stillness of people who had been given something true and were sitting inside the truth of it without being able to argue their way out. I’d spent twenty years in this pack having words used against me. It felt different to be the one who had just used them.

Vaela moved through me, slow and certain.

It’s done,’ she said.

I didn’t answer her out loud but I felt what she meant. Not just the speech. The whole of it. Everything that had needed to happen here had happened. Every name had been spoken. Every charge had been read. Every sentence had been delivered. And now I had stood in front of the full pack and said what I came to say and the hall had no more claims on me.

Caius spoke beside me, his voice carrying through the room with the finality of someone closing something permanently. This hearing is closed,he said. New leadership will be announced before we depart. Exiles leave before sundown. Transfers will be completed before nightfall. Ashcrest answers to the crown from this day forward.

The room absorbed it.

I looked at it one final time.

Not with anger. Not with grief. With the particular clarity of someone who has finished something they needed to finish and is ready to turn away from it completely.

Then I did.
