The border behind us

(Isla)

Caius finished speaking and the grounds went quiet.

I stood beside him and watched the pack absorb what they’d just been told and felt something I hadn’t expected to feel standing in Ashcrest. Not satisfaction. Not the particular relief of something finished. Something quieter than both, closer to the feeling I’d had when I first crossed Ashcrest’s border coming back and understood that the guards at the gate were his and not Rodan’s.

Something settling into place.

The three wolves standing in front of the pack were people I recognized by face if not by name. Mid rank. Ordinary in the way most wolves were ordinary, not remarkable in any way that would have drawn attention. I’d passed them on the grounds over the years and none of them had ever looked at me with cruelty. None of them had ever looked at me with particular kindness either.

They had simply existed here the way most wolves had existed here, going about their lives, staying inside the lines Rodan had drawn, not asking questions about what lived at the edge of the pack land.

But they hadn’t participated.

In Ashcrest that had apparently been enough to qualify as a different kind of wolf.

I thought about what that said about the standard this territory had been operating under and

I understood why Caius had made the choice he made. You couldn’t rebuild something broken by importing a new version of the same thing. You had to find what had survived intact inside the original structure and start from there.

Whether these three wolves were equal to what was being given to them I didn’t know yet.

Neither did they, probably.

But they were standing there and the pack was looking at them and Ashcrest was beginning to understand that the shape of things had changed permanently and none of that would have happened without everything that came before it.

I looked out across the grounds one more time.

The grounds where I’d scrubbed stone and carried wood and kept my eyes down for years. The grounds where the pack had watched things happen and called their watching nothing.

The grounds where I’d stood after the shift and felt sixty wolves bow to something they hadn’t expected to find here.

Vaela stirred inside me.

We’re done here,’ she said.

I looked at Caius.

He was already looking at me.

Ready?he asked.

Yes,” I said.

He turned to Zeron and gave the signal and the grounds began their final movements. I didn’t move toward the horses immediately. I stayed where I was for a moment and looked at the pack still assembled on the grounds. They were quieter than they’d been all day, the particular quiet of people who understood something was ending and were standing inside

the last moments of it.

I let myself look.

Not at anyone specific. At the territory itself. The path that ran between the pack house and the outer buildings. The training yard empty at this hour. The eastern tree line visible beyond the far fence. I’d walked every part of this land for twenty years. I knew the way the light fell across the grounds at this time of day and where the mud collected after rain and which fence posts had been leaning for so long that nobody remembered when they’d been straight.

I knew this place completely.

That hadn’t changed.

What had changed was what knowing it felt like now. It wasn’t home anymore. It hadn’t been home for a long time if it had ever been home at all. But it was the place I came from and standing here about to leave it for the last time I let myself hold that plainly without dressing it into something else.

Vaela moved inside me.

Not pushing. Just present.

Sera appeared at my side. How are you feeling?

Ready,I said.

The border behind us

She nodded once and moved toward the horses without adding anything to it.

I followed her.

The horses were ready at the front of the pack house, the formation already taking shape around them. Caius’s warriors mounted in sequence without instruction. Pryor stood to one side with the final documents under his arm, everything confirmed and sealed and leaving

with us.

Caius moved toward his horse without breaking stride and I stopped walking.

He noticed before I said anything. He turned and looked at me.

I want my own horse,I said.

He held my gaze for a moment. Then he looked at Zeron. Get her a horse.

Zeron moved immediately. Nobody commented on it. Nobody made it into something it didn’t need to be. Two minutes later a horse was brought forward, a dark bay mare, calm and well built, and I crossed to her and stood beside her for a moment before mounting without

help.

I settled into the saddle.

Caius was already watching me from his own horse, expression even, giving nothing away the way he gave nothing away when something had affected him and he’d decided not to

make it visible.

Beside you,I said. Not behind.

Yes,” he said.

Zeron took the front of the formation. The warriors fell into position. Everything was ready.

Nobody moved for a moment.

I felt the pack behind us, all the wolves still on the grounds, standing back and watching the way they’d been watching everything since the hearing. I didn’t turn to look at them. I could feel them through my senses, that layered complicated presence of sixty wolves who were going to have to figure out what came next without the structure they’d always operated

inside.
