The road into wraithborne–2
“What do you feel?”
She considered it for a moment. “Clear.”
That word fit her.
It fit the way she sat in the saddle. It fit the way she hadn’t looked back. It fit the quiet around her that wasn’t empty anymore. It was settled.
“Then clear is enough,” I said.
She looked at me again. “You don’t think I should feel something else?”
“No.”
“Most people would.”
“I’m not most people.”
That earned a small look from her.
“No,” she said. “You’re not.”
The road curved, and the trees opened slightly ahead. The sky beyond us had started to change color, the late day light thinning through the branches. We would not reach Wraithborne before full dark. We would reach the outer border before night settled
completely.
That was enough.
The closer we came, the more aware I became of the land ahead. Wraithborne had always answered me. Not in words. It was an old bond between king and territory, one built through
bloodline, rule, and recognition.
But today there was something else beneath it.
A waiting.
I felt it once, then again.
Vorak lifted his head inside me.
He felt it too.
I looked toward the trees ahead.

Isla’s horse slowed half a step before she corrected it. She had felt something. I saw it in the way her hand tightened on the reins. I saw it in the way her attention sharpened toward the road ahead.
“What is it?” I asked.
Isla didn’t answer immediately.
Her eyes stayed on the trees.
“I don’t know.”
That made my focus shift fully.
Zeron looked back from the front, sensing the change in us before anyone else did. I lifted one hand slightly, and the formation slowed at once. The horses settled into a quieter pace as we approached the border markers hidden among the trees. Then the stone posts came into view.
Old black stone.
Carved with the crown sigil and the first markings of Wraithborne territory.
I had crossed this border more times than I could count. It had always felt like mine. This time, before the land reached for me, it reached for her. Isla drew in a breath.
The bond between us warmed at once.
Not from me.
From the land.
Every warrior in the formation felt the change, though none of them spoke. Horses shifted. Wolves lifted their heads. The air itself seemed to recognize something moving through it. Something older than title and stronger than ceremony.
Isla stared at the border stones.
“What is that?” she asked quietly.
“Wraithborne,” I said.
Her eyes moved to mine.
“It’s answering you.”
She went still.

Still in the way someone became when a truth arrived and stood directly in front of them.
“It shouldn’t do that,” she said.
“No,” I said. “Not yet.”
Because she wasn’t marked. Because she hadn’t been crowned. Because the kingdom had
no formal reason to recognize her as anything beyond my accepted mate. But Vaela was not ordinary.
And neither was Isla.
The mare beneath her shifted once, then settled again as if the land itself had calmed her. Isla looked down briefly, then back at the stones. I watched her process it, not with panic, but with the same careful attention she gave everything important.
“What does it mean?” she asked.
I could have given her law. I could have given her history. I could have told her that territories didn’t answer to mates before the mark. Instead, I gave her the truth.
“It means Wraithborne knows you.”
Her lips parted slightly.
The words landed.
I felt them land through the bond.
She looked at the stones again, and something in her expression changed. Not pride. Not shock. Something quieter. Something that looked almost like belonging finding her before she had decided whether to reach for it.
Zeron lowered his head from the front of the formation.
Then the warriors behind him did the same.
One by one.
No command.
No order.
Isla noticed.

I didn’t lower my head. I was her mate. Her king. The man riding beside her. But I let the
others show what the land had already made clear.
Wraithborne had felt its queen coming home.
Isla swallowed once.
Only once.
Then she straightened in the saddle.
Vaela moved beneath her skin, and this time every wolf present felt it. The air changed again, not enough to force submission, but enough to make recognition pass through the formation. Isla looked at the border ahead.
“Do we cross?” she asked.
The question was simple.
The meaning wasn’t.
I held her gaze. “Together.”
She nodded once.
Zeron moved first, guiding the front of the formation through the markers. The warriors followed, slower now, more aware of what they were witnessing. I waited until Isla moved her horse forward. Then I matched her pace exactly.
We crossed the border side by side.
The moment her horse stepped onto Wraithborne land, the bond between us opened wider. Isla’s breath caught, but she didn’t stop. The land answered again, stronger this time, moving around her like recognition settling into place. I felt the shift through my own connection to
the territory.
Not a guest.
Not a rescued wolf.
Not a temporary presence inside my walls.
Hers.
Isla kept riding.
