Isla looked at him.
“I don’t think anyone fully understands what’s coming next.”
Cedric held her gaze.
“No.”
A small smile appeared.
“They don’t.”
For a moment nobody spoke.
Then Cedric nodded once, as though something had settled into place.
“Good.”
I looked at him.
“That’s twice you’ve said that.”
“It is.”
“And?”
Cedric stood.
“And I trust wolves who know the difference between certainty and arrogance.”
The decision was already made.
I could hear it in his voice.
Cedric looked between us.
“When the High Council arrives, Coldmere will stand where it should.”
The statement was simple.
No dramatic announcement.
No speech.
Just a decision.
Exactly the way Cedric preferred to make them.
Then he moved toward the door.
“I assume lunch is better than the food my escort has been complaining about all morning.”
I stared at him.

“You brought six vehicles.”
“Yes.”
“And they’re complaining already.”
“They started complaining three hours ago.”
Beside me, Isla laughed.
Cedric reached the door before stopping.
He looked back once.
“One piece of advice.”
Neither of us spoke.
“If the High Council starts arguing with each other, let them.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“That’s your advice?”
“Yes.”
A small smile appeared.

“Half their meetings end with them disagreeing anyway. There’s no reason for you to do their work for them.”
Isla laughed softly.
“That’s surprisingly reassuring.”
“It should be.”
Cedric opened the door.
“Enjoy the rest of your afternoon. The Council will create enough problems soon enough.”
Then he walked out.
The door closed behind him.
The room grew quiet again.
Isla looked at me.
“I think I like him.”
I sighed.
“I was afraid of that.”
Her smile widened immediately.

Of all the possible outcomes from this meeting, that one should have been lower on the list. Unfortunately, It wasn’t. Cedric had a habit of making wolves like him without appearing to try.
Most wolves noticed it eventually.
Apparently Isla had noticed it immediately.
“You’re going to tell him that.”
“Probably.”
I looked at her.
“That’s unfortunate.”
Her laugh filled the room again.
The bond warmed in response and I already knew Cedric would enjoy hearing about it. The fact that I knew that with complete certainty only made it worse.
For a few moments neither of us moved.
My thoughts returned briefly to the conversation we’d just had. Not the support from Coldmere. Not even the High Council.
Cedric had come here for one reason.
He wanted to know what happened after the meeting was over.
Most wolves were focused on proving what Isla was.
Cedric had been focused on who she would become.
There was a difference.
I understood why it mattered.
The Council would arrive. Questions would be asked. Arguments would happen. Decisions would be made.
Then everyone would go home.
What happened after that was the part that actually mattered.
I looked at Isla.
She was still smiling slightly.
