The Alpha King And His Chosen Luna novel Chapter 166

Not reaching anymore

(Isla)

I woke to quiet.

Not the quiet of early morning when the pack house hadn’t started yet. The quiet of midday, full and warm, the kind that meant the world had been going about its business for hours without needing anything from

  1. me.

Caius was beside me.

Not asleep. Lying on his back looking at the ceiling the way he looked at things he was thinking about without wanting to think about them. He turned his head when he felt me wake, the bond carrying it before I’d moved or made a sound.

How long was I asleep?I asked.

Long enough,” he said.

I looked at the covered window. The line of light along the edge of the canvas was different from this morning, higher, the sun having moved. I’d slept through most of the day.

I sat up slowly.

My body felt different. Not sore exactly, though there was some of that too, more like something had settled inside me that had been restless for a long time, The bond was warm and present and entirely without the reaching quality it had carried for weeks. Vaela was quiet inside me, not absent, just content in a way I was still getting used to feeling from her.

I want to go outside,I said.

Caius looked at me.

You just woke up,he said.

I know,I said. I still want to go outside.

He held my gaze for a moment. I could feel him working through the same calculation he’d been working through all morning, weighing what he wanted against what I was asking for, and I let him work through it without pushing because I understood by now that the working through was part of how he operated and rushing it didn’t help either of us.

Food first,he said.

Fine,I said. Food first.

He reached through the mind link and I felt it go, brief and directed, someone in the kitchen receiving it. I watched his face while he did it, the small shift that happened when he used the mind link, the slight focus that came and went in a second.

You do that so easily, I said

He looked at me. Do what?

The mind link,” I said. It looks like nothing to you.”

It’s been twenty years he said

I’ve had Vaela for less than that, said. It still feels like something when I use it.

It will stop feeling like something,” he said. Eventually it becomes the same as speaking out loud. You stop noticing the difference

I thought about that. I was still at the stage where using the mind link required intention, a conscious reaching rather than an automatic one. The idea that it would one day be as simple as talking felt far away but not impossible.

Food arrived quickly, brought by a young wolf who kept her eyes down and said Your Majesties without looking at either of us directly and left as quietly as she’d come. I watched the door close behind her

They all know,I said.

Yes,Caius said.

How?

The pack bond,he said. It runs between every wolf in the territory. When something significant happens they feel it before anyone says a word.

I looked at the food and then at the covered window and then at my hands in my lap. The mark was on my neck, I could feel it the way I could feel Vaela, a presence that hadn’t been there before, settled and

certain.

We ate without talking much. That was one of the things I’d come to appreciate about meals with him, the absence of the need to fill them. The room was quiet and neither of us needed it to be anything else.

When we were done he looked at me.

Outside,I said before he could offer an alternative.

Something moved through his expression that was almost amusement. He stood and I stood with him and he held out his hand and I took it the way I took things now, without the pause that used to live between wanting and allowing myself to have.

I let go long enough to find clothes and pull them on. Nothing elaborate. Whatever was closest. Then I took his hand again and we went downstairs.

The pack house felt different as we moved through it. Not in any way I could have described precisely, just different, the way a familiar room felt different after something significant had happened inside it. Pack members we passed lowered their heads, not quickly and then back up the way they did when I was simply the Alpha King’s mate moving through their space. Slowly, fully, holding it.

I felt Vaela lift inside me in response,

We stepped outside.

The cold hit me first, clean and immediate, the kind of cold that came in the afternoon when the sun had moved past its highest point and the air had started to think about evening. I stood on the steps and breathed it in and felt the territory reach for me the way it had reached for me since the first time 1 crossed its border.

Except it wasn’t the same.

Before it had been a recognition, something in the land lifting toward me, curious and certain, the way a wolf lifted its head toward something it already knew. This was different. This was deeper. This was the territory not reaching toward me but simply including me, the way it included the trees and the ground and everything else that belonged to it fully and permanently.

I stood very still and let it settle around me.

Caius was beside me, his hand still around mine, watching my face the way he watched things that mattered to him.
