The Alpha King And His Chosen Luna novel Chapter 171

The whole of it

(Isla)

I looked at him for a moment before I spoke.

Why did you do it?I asked. “Not what you said in the hall. I heard that I mean why. Not the orders. Not Rodan. Why did you do it when you didn’t have to.

He was quiet for a moment.

Because it was easy,he said.

That landed differently than I expected.

Not a complicated answer. Not an excuse dressed up as an explanation. Just the truth sitting there with nothing around it.

Easy,” I said.

You were there,he said. You couldn’t fight back. Rodan wanted someone to take it out on and you were the option. I could have chosen not to. I didn’t.He held my gaze. That’s the whole of it.

I looked at him.

You knew it was wrong,I said.

Yes,he said.

While you were doing it.

Yes,he said again.

I sat with that. The honesty of it was harder to hold than anger would have been. Anger I knew how to carry. This required something else, something I didn’t have a name for yet, the work of standing in front of a truth that didn’t resolve into anything clean.

Did you ever think about stopping?I asked.

C

He looked at the floor for a second before looking back at me. Once,he said. When you were sixteen. You got sick and Rodan pulled the wolfsbane for three days because he needed you working. I saw what three days without it did to you.He stopped. I thought about it then.

But you didn’t stop,I said.

No,he said. I didn’t.

Dara was still beside him, not touching him, not inserting herself into the conversation. Just there, the way Caius was behind me. Present. Letting it be what it needed to be.

What changed?I asked. “In the hall. You didn’t have to say what you said. You could have said you followed orders and let it land differently.

Brent looked at me. I’d been carrying it since Caius walked through the door of that shack,he said. Every

day after that. Watching what Ashcrest became when someone actually looked at it clearly. Watching What you became when someone gave you room to.” He paused. The hall felt like the only place I was ever going to get to put it down.

I looked at him for long moment.

Vaela stirred inside me. Not pushing Just present, the way she was present when something required her

attention but not her intervention.

You didn’t do it for me,I said. What you said in the hall.

No,” he said. I did it because it was true and it needed saying. You didn’t need anything from me by then

That was the most honest thing he’d said and it landed the way honest things landed, without softening, without asking for anything back.

I looked at Dara

He told you all of this,I said. Before you helped him.

Yes,she said.

And you still chose him.

I chose him because he told me,she said. Not in spite of it. A man who tells you the worst of himself before he has any reason to is a different thing from a man who hides it.

I looked between them.

Something had shifted that I couldn’t name exactly. Not forgiveness. Not resolution. Something quieter than both of those things. A story that had been told one way for a long time being held up to the light and examined from a different angle.

I turned to Caius.

He was watching me. Not Brent. Me. Waiting for whatever came next with the same patience he’d brought to every difficult thing since the day he found me.

I looked back at Brent.

Your sentence is still pending,I said. I want you to understand that clearly. What you told Dara and what you said in that hall and what you’ve built here doesn’t erase what you did. It doesn’t move the line.

I know,he said.

But it’s information,I said. And I’m going to take it back with me and sit with it before anything gets decided.

He nodded once.

Is there anything you want to say to me?I asked. Not about the sentence. Not about Dara. Anything you want to say to me directly.

He was quiet for a long moment

Then he said, I’m sorry

Two words. No elaboration. No list of everything he was sorry for or explanation of how sorry or what it had cost him to get here, Just the words sitting in the air between us.

I looked at him.

I know,I said.

Not I forgive you. Not it’s fine. Not any of the things people said when they wanted a moment to be over

Just I know

Because I did know. I’d known it from the hall when he’d stripped the excuse out before it could form. I’d known it in the market when he looked away first. I’d known it sitting across from Dara twenty minutes ago when she’d told me he’d said everything before she had any reason to stay.

I knew.

What I did with knowing was a different question and one I wasn’t ready to answer today.

I stood up.

Caius moved with me, not rushing, just there.

I looked at Dara. What you did had consequences,I said. You understand that.

Yes,” she said.

Caius will address that separately,I said. But I want you to know I understand why you made the choice you made. That matters to me even if it doesn’t change what the choice was.

She held my gaze. Thank you,she said quietly.
