(Caius)

I reached the cabin a few minutes later.

I shifted before I reached the porch and carried the meat over to the fire pit. The wood beside it was still dry, and it didn’t take long to get the fire going again. Once it caught, I set the grate over it

and started getting the meat ready.

The cabin door opened behind me.

I looked over and found Isla standing there with the blanket wrapped around her

I thought you were waiting inside,I said.

She smiled.

I was.

Then why are you out here?

Because you came back.

I looked at her for a moment before smiling.

I won’t be long.

I know.

She walked over and sat on the bench beside the fire. The blanket was still wrapped around her, and she tucked her feet up beneath it. She watched me without saying anything while I laid the first

pieces of meat over the grate.

It smells good already,she said.

It’ll smell better in a few minutes.

I’m looking forward to that.

I turned the meat and looked over at her.

For a while neither of us spoke. The fire did its job, and the mountain was quiet around us.

I turned the meat. It didn’t need much longer. I’d promised Isla dinner, and I intended to keep that promise the same way I kept every other one. Some promises changed a person’s life. Others were as simple as making sure they didn’t go to bed hungry.

I checked the meat one last time before taking the first piece off the grate.

The smell had already reached Isla. She watched every move I made like she was trying to remember it. I found two plates inside the cabin and brought them back out. I gave hers to her first before making one for myself.

I looked up from the fire.

Isla hadn’t said another word. She didn’t seem to mind the silence. Every now and then our eyes met, and she’d smile before looking back at the fire. It was easy sitting out here with her. Easier than I ever expected it would be.

She took another bite and looked at me.

This is so good.

You sound surprised.

I am.

There’s barely any seasoning.

I smiled.

You’re a wolf.

She looked at me.

You don’t need to season everything,I said. She smiled and nodded in agreement.

We ate in silence after that.

There wasn’t much left by the time we finished eating.

I set my plate aside and looked at Isla. She looked comfortable sitting here. I’d wanted tonight to

be simple for her and somehow it turned out that way. That pleased me more than I expected.

She noticed me watching her. What is it?

I was just thinking.

About what?she asked.

That you look happy.Something changed in her expression.

She held my gaze for a moment before she smiled.

I am.

Her voice was quiet, but there wasn’t any doubt in it.

I’m happy just being here with you.

I didn’t answer straight away.

There wasn’t anything I could say that would mean more than those words already did. I reached across the space between us and rested my hand against her cheek. She leaned into it without thinking, and I closed the distance between us and kissed her.

It wasn’t a long kiss.

Just enough to tell her what I couldn’t find the words for. When I drew back, she was still smiling.

I love seeing you like this,I said.

So do I.

She took my hand and held it between both of hers.

I never thought life could be this simple.

It won’t always be.

I know.

She looked into my eyes.

But as long as I have you, I think I’ll be alright.

I brushed my thumb over her hand.

You will.

How do you know?

Because you won’t be facing any of it alone again.

She looked at me for a long moment.

I’m glad you accepted me that day.

I frowned slightly.

In the shack.

I knew exactly which day she meant.

I didn’t even have a wolf then,she said. I wasn’t an Alpha. I wasn’t a Beta. I wasn’t anything.

You were Isla.

She smiled, but there was sadness in it.

A lot of Alphas wouldn’t have seen it that way.

A simple night

They would’ve seen a weak human standing in front of them.

I didn’t answer.

They would’ve rejected me without even thinking about it.

I reached for her hand again.

I’m not a lot of Alphas.

I know.

She looked down for a moment before meeting my eyes again.

I’ve thought about it more than once.

About what?

What would’ve happened if someone else had found me first.”

I didn’t like the thought.

I don’t think I’d still be here.

You are.

Because you found me.

I shook my head.

No.

She looked at me.

You’re here because you kept fighting, even when you thought there wasn’t anything left to fight

for.

A small smile crossed her face.

You still gave me a chance.

I would’ve given you that chance no matter who you were.

She searched my face.

Really?

I nodded once.

I would’ve accepted you whether you were an Omega, a Beta, an Alpha, or someone with no wolf

at all.

O

A simple night

Her eyes didn’t leave mine.

Why?

Because none of those things tell me who you are.

She was quiet.
