Patterns across time

(Isla)

I took the next book from Caius and rested it beside the others.

It looked no different from the rest.

The cover was worn, the corners softened by years of careful hands. The pages looked just as old as every record we’d opened that morning. Yet I found myself wondering what piece of the story it had been holding all this time.

I’d come here expecting to learn about my abilities.

Instead, I was learning about the wolves who had carried them before me.

Somehow, that felt even more important.

I opened the book carefully.

The handwriting was different again.

Another writer. Another generation. Another wolf who’d seen something they couldn’t fully explain. I found myself wondering how many of them had walked away believing they’d witnessed a single strange moment, never realizing it was part of a much bigger story.

I looked at Caius.

“They all noticed something,” I said.

“They did.”

“But none of them knew what they were looking at.”

“No.”

I looked back at the page.

“Maybe we’re the first ones trying to read all of it together.”

I lowered my eyes to the page again.

It made me wonder how many stories had been overlooked simply because no one knew they belonged together. Each writer had recorded only the moment in front of them. None of them had lived long enough to see the pattern stretching across generations.

The thought settled quietly inside me.

Maybe that was how history worked more often than people realized. It wasn’t always one complete story waiting to be found. Sometimes it was hundreds of small pieces, waiting patiently for someone willing to fit them together.

I turned the page slowly.

Chains

There was no mention of a Celestial wolf. No remarkable title or obvious clue waiting for me. Just another account written by someone who’d believed they were recording an ordinary day.

I found myself reading more carefully because of that.

The biggest answers might not be hiding in dramatic moments. They might be waiting in ordinary details that everyone else had overlooked After everything we’d found already, I wasn’t willing to dismiss anything too quickly.

I pointed to a short paragraph near the bottom of the page

“This doesn’t seem important.”

Caius stepped beside me.

“What does it say?”

“It mentions a woman visiting for only one evening, but the writer spends three lines describing how everyone kept watching her.”

He read it silently.

“They noticed her.”

“But they didn’t know why.”

“No.”

I smiled faintly.

“It feels like that’s becoming a pattern too.”

“I think you’re right.”

I looked at the paragraph again.

“It never says what she did.”

Caius nodded.

“Only what everyone else did.”

I read it one more time.

“They stopped talking when she entered. They watched her until she left. Then the writer moved on to something else.”

I looked up.

“As though that part wasn’t important.”

“To them, it probably wasn’t.”

“But it is to us.”

“Yes.”

picked up my pencil and wrote another note.

People noticed her before they understood her.

I looked down at the list I’d started.

It wasn’t very long.

Claim

Just a handful of observations gathered from different centuries. Yet every new note made the ones above it feel stronger somehow. Alone, they were interesting. Together, they were beginning to tell a story.

I rested the pencil against the page.

Maybe that was how truth survived.

Not because someone understood all of it at once, but because enough people noticed small pieces and cared enough to write them down.

Caius was quiet for a moment before reaching toward another stack.

“History isn’t the only thing stored here,” he said.

I looked up.

“What do you mean?”

He pulled out a thinner book bound in dark leather.

“Some Alphas kept training journals alongside the records. Most are ordinary.”

He rested his hand on the cover.

“But I found one that mentions symbols used to focus a wolf’s senses. I don’t know if they’ll help a Celestial wolf.”

I felt my curiosity grow.

“Then I think we should find out.”

He opened the journal carefully.

The first few pages were filled with sketches instead of writing. Circles. Lines. Marks arranged in patterns didn’t recognize. They looked simple at first, but the longer I studied them, the more deliberate they seemed.

“What are they?” I asked.

“I’m not certain.”

He traced one symbol with his finger.

“The notes beside them describe exercises for focus and awareness. They weren’t created for a Celestial wolf, but they may help us understand how earlier wolves trained their minds before relying on instinct,”

I leaned closer to the page.

The symbols had been drawn with purpose.

Claen

Some repeated throughout the journal, while others appeared only once beside different notes. Whoever had created them had been trying to teach something, not simply record it.

I looked at Caius.

“Do you think they still work?”

“I think they worked for the wolves who created them.”

“And for me?”

He smiled faintly.

“That’s what we’re going to discover.”
