The welght of a king
(Caius)
The walk to my office gave me enough time to leave the training ground behind.
At least, that was the plan.
It didn’t work.
Every few minutes my thoughts returned to the silver light that had answered Isla’s touch. I’d always believed the journal would respond to her one day. Seeing it happen was something else entirely.
I set the thought aside as I stepped into my office.
Work came first.
Pryor was already waiting beside my desk.
“There you are.”
“I told you I’d be here.”
He handed me the first report.
“Three patrols returned this afternoon. Two trade requests came in from neighboring packs, and there are supply requests that need your approval before the stores are restocked.”
I nodded.
“Let’s get started.”
The rest of the afternoon was spent working through the reports.
Pryor worked through the reports while I read each page before signing where it was needed. Patrol updates, supply requests, repair schedules, and training reports filled the next hour. None of it came as a surprise, but every decision mattered. Leading a pack wasn’t only about protecting it. It was about making sure every part of it continued to work.
When we finished the last report, Pryor gathered the empty folders.
“That’s everything for today,” he said.
“For now.”
He smiled.
“I’ll leave you to it.”
Once he was gone, the office became quiet again.
Hleaned back in my chair before my eyes settled on the leather bound journal resting on the corner of my desk.
The weight of lang
Hreached for it without thinking.
The page we’d studied that morning was still marked. I looked at the first symbol before turning to the next page. More symbols filled the paper, each one different from the last.
The journal held the knowledge.
Teaching Isla how to use it was my responsibility.
After a few minutes, I closed it and set it aside.
Tomorrow we’d continue.
Until then, there was still work to do.
I picked up my pen and opened the next report.
The training grounds needed repairs before winter.
Two young warriors had requested permission to begin advanced combat training.
One hunting party wanted to extend its route farther into the western forest.
I approved the repairs.
Denied the hunting request until the border patrol finished checking the area.
Approved the training.
Simple decisions.
Necessary ones.
Each signature represented someone trusting me to make the right choice.
By the time I set my pen down, the pile on my desk had grown noticeably smaller.
Outside the window, the afternoon sun had begun to sink behind the trees.
Without meaning to, my thoughts drifted back to Isla.
1 wondered if she was still with Sera.
Claim
She’d said she didn’t want to spend the afternoon sitting in our quarters. Knowing the two of them, they were probably sharing tea by now. Sera would want to hear every detail about the training, and Isla would happily tell her all of it.
A small smile crossed my face.
She’d waited a long time to understand what it meant to be a Celestial wolf.
Today had given her the first real answer.
There would be many more lessons.
Some would be easier than others.

I’d known that before we ever opened the journal
I also knew I’d be beside her through every one of them.
I gathered the completed reports into one stack and pushed them aside.
There was still enough daylight left to check on the training grounds before dinner.
I stood, straightened my jacket, and headed for the door.
Work wasn’t finished yet.
It rarely was.
The moment I stepped outside, I spotted Zeron crossing the courtyard.
He noticed me and changed direction.
“Alpha King.”
“What is it?”
“The repairs to the eastern fence have already started.”
I nodded.
“Good.”
“The workers think they’ll have it finished before sunset.”
“Tell them not to rush it. I’d rather it be done properly than quickly.”
“I already gave them the same instruction.”
A small smile appeared on my face.
“I should have known.”
He nodded once.
“The afternoon training session is underway as well. Everything’s running as it should.”
“Let’s have a look.”
We walked toward the training grounds together.
Claim
Warriors were spread across the field, working through drills while the instructors watched and corrected them when needed. Wooden training weapons struck together as others practiced hand to hand combat or ran the obstacle course.
I stood beside Zeron for several minutes without interrupting.
Everything was organized.
Everyone knew their role.
The weight of king
Exactly as it should be.
“You’ve done good work,” I said.
“We all have.”
I looked across the field one last time before turning to him.
“Keep me informed if anything changes.”
“I will, Alpha King.”
I left the training grounds and headed back toward the pack house.
Claun
Dinner wasn’t far off, and there were still a few things I wanted to finish before the day came to an end.
The evening had settled over Wraithbone. Pack members were finishing the last of their work before dinner while others gathered outside their homes to talk. Children laughed somewhere across the courtyard, and I stopped for a moment to watch them.
This was why every report mattered.
Every patrol. Every decision. Every lesson.
None of it existed on its own.
It was all for them.
I stepped inside the pack house and climbed the stairs to our quarters.
When I opened the door, I found Isla sitting by the window with a book resting on her lap.
She looked up immediately.
“There you are.”
