A new discovery

I woke to Caius watching me.
Not the way I sometimes woke to find him already up and moving. He was still beside me, propped up slightly, studying me with an expression I couldn’t read yet because I hadn’t been awake long enough.
“What?” I asked.
“Something happened last night,” he said.
I blinked. “What kind of something?”
He was quiet for a moment.
“You were floating,” he said.
I stared at him.
“In your sleep,” he said. “About a foot off the bed. Vaela was close to the surface. There was silver in your skin.”
I sat up slowly.
“You’re serious,” I said.
“Yes,” he said.
My gaze dropped to my hands. They looked the same as they always did. Nothing about them suggested that I’d apparently spent part of the night floating above the bed without knowing it.
“Did I come down on my own?” I asked.
“No,” he said. “I brought you back.”
My eyes fell to my hands again.
“Did anything else happen?” I asked.
“No,” he said. “Just that.”
Just that. As if floating a foot off the bed in the middle of the night while completely asleep was a minor detail.
I reached for Vaela.
She was there immediately, warm and settled, and I felt something in her that I hadn’t felt before. Not guilt exactly. Something closer to satisfaction.
‘You knew, I said.
‘Yes, she said.

‘You didn’t stop.’
‘No, she said. ‘I didn’t want to.
‘Why?’
She was quiet for a moment.
‘Because I could,’ she said. ‘And I wanted to know how long.’ –
I sat with that for a moment.
“She did it on purpose,” I told Caius.
He met my eyes.
“I know.”
“You’re not surprised.”
“Not entirely,” he said. “Vaela has always known more than she lets on.”
My attention drifted to the ceiling.
‘How long?’ I asked her.
‘Long enough,’ she said.
‘That’s not an answer.
‘It’s the only one I have,’ she said. ‘I don’t measure time the way you do!
I turned back to Caius.
“Was it worrying?” I asked. “When you saw it.”
He thought about it before answering.
Claimi
“No,” he said. “It tells me we’ve been working with a fraction of what you’re capable of. That’s not worrying. It’s just information we didn’t have before.”

I thought about the training sessions. The symbol in the dirt. The light spreading to my shoulders and stopping there. Two days of careful work and conscious practice. Meanwhile, Vaela had apparently been doing something completely different on her own in the middle of the night without breaking a sweat.
‘Can you do it again?’ I asked her.
‘Yes, she said without hesitation.
‘Could you do it while I’m awake?”
She was quiet for a moment.
‘I don’t know, she said. ‘Last night was easier.
My attention shifted back to Calus.

The conscious mind is still the limiting factor, isn’t it?” I said. “When I’m awake I’m watching the gift, reacting to it. When I’m asleep none of that is happening.”
He nodded once.
“Yes. Exactly that.”
“So the training is teaching me to get out of my own way,” I said.
“And last night showed us what’s possible when you do,” he said.
I glanced toward the window. Morning had fully arrived.
“We need those journals,” I said.
“I know,” he said. “I’m going to the library after breakfast.”
“I’m coming with you,” I said.
He raised an eyebrow.
“You said after breakfast,” I said. “So we eat first. Then we go.”
Something moved through his expression that wasn’t quite a smile but was close.
“Then we eat first,” he said.

I got up, found my clothes, and pulled them on. Vaela was warm inside me, settled and content in a way she hadn’t been yesterday.
‘You’re pleased with yourself,’ I said to her.
‘A little,’ she said.
I smiled and turned to Caius.
“Eat first,” he said.
“Then the library,” I said.
“Then the library,” he agreed.
We left our quarters together a few minutes later. My thoughts never wandered far from the library waiting somewhere ahead of us. Every step only made me more curious about what we might find there. I had a feeling this morning was about to answer at least one question.
The corridors were already filling with people starting their day. Pack members greeted us as we passed, and I returned every greeting with a smile. Caius stayed beside me without saying much. Neither of us needed words to know exactly where we were going.
The dining hall came into view a moment later. The smell of fresh bread and cooked eggs reached me before we stepped inside. More voices filled the room than yesterday, but the greetings didn’t distract me for long. My thoughts were still waiting in the library.
Caius glanced at me as we collected our breakfast.
< A new discovery.
“You’re thinking ahead again,” he said.
I smiled without denying it.
“I’m trying,” I said, “but it’s not working very well.”
He sat across from me and waited until I’d taken my first bite.
“There,” he said. “Now we’re making progress.”
I laughed.
“I thought the progress was supposed to happen in the library.”
“It will,” he said. “But you’ll learn more on a full stomach than an empty one.”
“I know you’re right,” I said.
“That doesn’t happen often,” he replied.
I smiled and shook my head.
“It happens more than you think.”
Clair
He smiled back before taking another bite of his breakfast. We ate in comfortable silence after that, and for once I made myself focus on the food instead of the questions waiting for me. By the time I finished, I was ready to leave the moment Caius stood.
Breakfast was over sooner than I expected.
I rose with him and waited while he pushed his chair back into place. Neither of us spoke as we left the dining hall. We didn’t need to. Our destination had been decided the moment he told me I’d been floating in my sleep, and now the only thing left was to see if the library held the answers we were searching for.
