The end of one chapter

(Caius)

I woke before the sun had fully risen.

Isla was asleep beside me with one hand resting near mine. She hadn’t moved much during the night. I stayed where I was and watched her for a moment.

Yesterday’s questions had followed us from the library. The hidden page had given us more questions than answers, and seeing Derek and Helene’s names written there had only deepened the mystery.

Without opening her eyes, Isla moved a little closer. Her fingers found my wrist beneath the blankets. I turned my hand and held hers. She settled again almost immediately.

I didn’t want to wake her.

She’d spent hours searching through records that had led nowhere. Even after we’d stopped, she’d wanted to keep looking. Isla had never been the sort of wolf to leave a question unanswered.

A quiet knock sounded at the door.

I almost ignored it.

Then it came again.

Isla opened her eyes.

Someone’s at the door.

I heard.

Are you going to answer it?

I was considering pretending I didn’t.

She smiled.

That isn’t very kingly.”

No one said I had to be kingly before breakfast.

A quiet laugh escaped her.

Γ

She pulled the blankets higher before closing her eyes again. I kissed her forehead and slipped out of bed Another knock came just before I reached the door.

Pryor stood outside.

He wore his formal coat despite the early hour. One look at his face told me the visit couldn’t wait. i stepped into the hallway and pulled the door almost closed behind me.

Alpha King.

What happened?

A royal guard delivered a report this morning.

I already knew what it would say.

Rodan’s sentence was carried out at first light,” Pryor said.

He offered me the sealed report.

The commanding officer confirmed his death.

I accepted it but didn’t break the seal.

I’d been the one to pass the sentence. The report wasn’t telling me anything new. It only confirmed the order had been carried out.

Was there any trouble?

None.

Did he say anything?

Nothing the commanding officer considered necessary to record.

I looked at the seal for a moment.

Rodan had met the end the same way he’d faced judgment. He hadn’t begged. He hadn’t asked for mercy. Pride had stayed with him until the end.

Has Ashcrest been informed?

Yes. Official notice was delivered before the report was sent.

And Helene?

She’ll receive notice as well.

I handed the report back.

There isn’t any need to bring that inside. Isla doesn’t need the details.

I understand.

Have the morning reports placed in my office.”

I’ll see to it.

Thank you, Pryor.

He bowed before walking away.

I remained where I was for another moment.

Rodan was dead.

The end of one chapter

After everything he’d done, I thought I might feel satisfaction. Instead there was only the certainty that one chapter had finally closed.

When I returned to our room, Isla was sitting against the pillows.

Her hair framed her face, and she still looked half asleep. She watched me close the door.

That was Pryor.

It was.

Something happened.

I sat beside her.

Rodan had already taken enough from her. I wasn’t about to let his death take arry more.

A royal guard delivered a report,” I said.

She waited.

Rodan was executed at first light.

She didn’t react straight away.

I watched her carefully.

There was no fear.

No sadness.

Only acceptance.

Are you all right?I asked.

Yes.

She held my gaze for a moment before speaking again.

I wondered how I’d feel when this day came.

And now?

She shrugged lightly.

It doesn’t change anything.”

I waited.

He stopped having any place in my life the day you found me.

I reached for her hand.

I know.

She intertwined her fingers with mine.

-don’t have anything left to say about Rodan.

You don’t have to.

She shook her head

I left him behind a long time ago.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.

It simply marked the end of something that had already been over for a long time.

She looked at me again.

We have more important things to do.

The journal?

She smiled.

The journal. My training. The Eastern council.

I smiled back.

I thought you’d say that.

I’d rather spend my time finding answers than thinking about someone who’s already part of the past.

So would I.

She climbed out of bed and walked to the window.

Morning light filled the room as she looked out over Wraithbone.

I don’t want today to be remembered because Rodan died, she said.

What do you want it remembered for?

The day we moved forward.
