The missing records–2
“What did you see the second time?”
“The same room, but there were more people.”
She told me she had counted at least seven figures. One had been standing near a table covered with papers, while another kept watch near the door. Before she could hear more, the vision had disappeared.
“Did it hurt you?”
“No, but it left me tired.”
That answer didn’t ease my concern. Her face looked normal now, but I didn’t know what repeated visions could do to her. We couldn’t treat her gift like something without limits.
I closed the journal before she could touch the symbol again. She watched my hand but didn’t try to stop me. I knew she wouldn’t like what I was about to say.
“You’re not doing that again until we understand it better.”
Her expression changed at once. She didn’t argue yet, but I could see the words forming. Isla had never liked being told to stand aside when danger involved her.
“We don’t have time to wait.”
I understood why she felt that way. The council would arrive tomorrow, and someone might already know the journal had been found. Still, I wasn’t willing to risk her life for an answer we might not get.
“Then we use the time we have properly.”
She leaned back in her chair. The frustration remained, but she was listening. That was enough for now.
“How do we do that?”
“We start with your gift, not the journal.”
She looked toward the closed book again. The journal had forced a vision on her because she wasn’t prepared for what it held. I wanted her to learn control before she touched it again. P
“You think I can train this quickly?”
“I think we have to try.”
I moved the council letter closer to her. The messenger’s fear had stayed with me since Pryor described it. If Isla could sense what had happened before the letter reached Wraithbone, we might learn more withou putting her in danger.
“Start with this.”
She picked up the letter and held it between both hands. Nothing happened at first, and she looked at me for guidance. I kept my voice calm.
“Don’t search for words.”

She closed her eyes. Her fingers moved over the seal while the rest of her remained still. Several moments passed before her breathing changed.
“Fear.”
I watched her face. The answer came without hesitation, but ! needed to know more. Fear could have belonged to the messenger or to whoever had sent him.
“Whose fear?”
