The truth takes shape
Amos hesitated.
“It did.”
“Explain.”
“He became more cautious.”
“In what way?”
Claim
“He gave fewer written orders. More instructions were delivered by word of mouth. Even routine matters stopped appearing in the official records.”
No one interrupted him.
I exchanged a brief glance with Pryor.
That wasn’t poor record keeping.
It was an intentional change in how Ashcrest operated.
I broke the silence.
“Master Vale, I have a question.”
Amos looked at me.
“Yes, Alpha King.”
“When Alpha Rodan postponed my visit to Ashcrest, did you notice any change in how the pack was being run?”
He nodded slowly.
“I did.”
“Explain.”
“He became harder to reach. Fewer meetings were recorded. More instructions were given in private, and only to wolves he trusted.”
I remembered the reports Zeron had given me before we rode to Ashcrest.
Three cancelled visits.
One excuse I had already proved was false.
Another that had never made sense.
Then no excuse at all.
I looked back at Amos.
“Did those changes become more noticeable with each delay?”
“Yes, Alpha King.”
The truth takes shape
Halvon leaned forward.
“So while the King’s inspection was being delayed, official records were disappearing.”
“That is correct.”
Evander spoke calmly.
Claim
“Or Alpha Rodan simply became more secretive over time. We should be careful not to connect unrelated events.”
I met his eyes.
“When I finally reached Ashcrest, Alpha Rodan lied about a border dispute that never existed. He attempted to explain away concentrated wolfsbane on his land. He tried to prevent me from inspecting the eastern grounds alone.”
The chamber remained silent.
“Now we have heard that, during the same period, written orders became rare, private meetings increased, and Council letters disappeared.”
My eyes moved around the table.
“Any one of those facts could be dismissed on its own.”
I paused.
“Together, they cannot.”
No one answered.
Even Evander remained silent.
The truth was still incomplete.
But it was finally taking shape.
Sorin looked from Amos to the rest of the Council.
“The witness has established a clear sequence of events.”
He folded his hands on the table.
“Secret correspondence arrived. Official records became incomplete. Written orders became less
common.”
Halvon nodded.
“And the King’s inspection was delayed until it could no longer be postponed.”
“That is also established,” Sorin replied.
Evander remained composed.
“We should remember that Alpha Rodan is no longer here to explain his decisions.”
The truth takes shape
“He was given that opportunity,” I said.
Every eye turned toward me.
Claim
“I questioned him before judgment was passed. He offered explanations for the delays, the false border dispute, and the wolfsbane on Ashcrest land.”
I let the silence settle over the chamber
“None of those explanations survived investigation.”
Pryor opened another page in his notes.
“Then today’s testimony supports what was already discovered.”
“It does.”
I looked at Amos once more.
“You have not accused anyone.”
“No, Alpha King.”
“You have simply told us what you witnessed.”
“Nothing more.”
I nodded once.
“Sometimes that is enough.”
Silence settled over the chamber again.
Rodan had already answered for his crimes.
This hearing was no longer about him.
It was about discovering who had stood behind him all along
Sorin looked toward Amos.
“Master Vale, the Council thanks you for your honesty.”
Amos bowed.
“I have told you everything I know.”
“I believe you have.”
Pryor closed his folder.
“I have no further questions.”
“Nor do I,” Halvon said.
Sorin looked around the chamber.
The truth takes shape
“Does any member of the Council wish to question the witness further?”
No one spoke.
Even Evander remained silent.
Sorin gave a single nod.
“Your testimony is concluded.”
Amos bowed once more before an attendant escorted him from the chamber.
The doors closed behind him.
My eyes moved around the table.
Some elders looked troubled.
Others were deep in thought.
Each of them was weighing the testimony against everything they already knew.
Only Evander remained unreadable.
His expression hadn’t changed since the hearing began.
Sorin leaned back in his chair.
“The witness has given us much to consider.”
“He has,” Halvon agreed.
Pryor gathered the documents into neat stacks.
“I will prepare today’s testimony for the official record.”
“Do so,” Sorin said.
He looked around the chamber.
“We have reached a suitable point to suspend today’s session.”
Several elders nodded.
“The Council will recess for one hour.”
He struck the gavel once.
“This hearing will resume afterward.”
