Isla stared at the book in her hands. A name had been written across the cover, but it wasn’t the name she had known all her life. I saw her eyes move over it more than once. Then she looked at Tavian.

“Isalienne Rowan.”

Tavian nodded.

“The name your parents gave you.”

Isla looked down at the cover again. I could see the moment she understood why part of the name felt familiar. Isla was still there, but someone had taken the rest away, Rowan belonged to Darius.

“Derek and Helene changed it.”

“They shortened your name and gave you Derek’s family name.”

Isla’ran her fingers across the writing. Everything we’d learned about her disappearance came back to the message found in Silvermere. Her name would be changed and her blood would remain hidden. Now we knew exactly what those words meant.

“They kept Isla.”

“Yes.”

Isla opened the book. Writing covered the first page, and she stopped when she saw the name again. Lyrienne had written to the daughter she knew as Isalienne. Isla began reading.

She stared at those words. Vaela came closer inside her, and Vorak noticed her immediately. I reached across the table and took Isla’s hand. She continued reading.

“If this book has reached you, then something I prayed for has happened. You survived. Whatever name you have known, remember that Isalienne Rowan was the name your father and I gave you. You were ours before anyone took you away.”

Isla stopped reading. Her fingers remained against the page. Tavian said nothing from across the table. This belonged to Isla.

“My mother knew they might change my name.”

“She must have suspected it.”

Isla returned to the page. Lyrienne wrote about the message claiming her daughter had died. Wolves around her had accepted it after their searches failed. She never did.

“I could never accept that you were gone. Your father couldn’t accept it either. Darius loved you before he ever held you. He spoke your name every day while we waited for you.”

him through Lyrienne gave her something different. These weren’t records written by wolves who had watched from outside.

“What was he like?” tsla asked.

Tavian came closer.

“Lyrienne talked about him often.”

He told Isla that Darius had been certain they were having a daughter before anyone confirmed it. He had helped choose Isalienne and prepared for her arrival in Silvermere. Everything had been ready for the child who never arrived. He had spent years hoping the reports about her death were wrong.

Isla turned another page. Corvin Rell’s name appeared among Lyrienne’s writing. I moved closer to read with her. This was where her search had taken her.

“I found Corvin’s trail years after you disappeared. By then I knew he couldn’t have acted without help. He knew where you would be, when you would be moved, and which wolves were involved. Someone gave him that information.”

Zeron came closer when Isla finished reading. We had already suspected Corvin hadn’t acted alone. Lyrienne had discovered the same thing centuries ago. She had spent years trying to find the wolf behind

him.

Isla continued reading. Lyrienne had followed every name connected to Corvin. Some led nowhere, but others brought her cioser to wolves with influence outside their own territories. Then she discovered something that changed her search.

“Someone connected to the High Council knew about you before your birth. I don’t know how much they knew or who gave Corvin his orders. I stopped recording names when I realized my search might be watched. I couldn’t risk leaving everything 1 knew in one place.”

Isla looked at me. I understood what she was thinking. Evander had been involved in what happened much later, but Lyrienne’s words reached back centuries. Someone else had been involved before Evander was even born.

“This started long before Evander.”

“It did.”

Isla looked back at the book. We had another piece of the conspiracy, but no name. Whoever had helped Corvin had known enough about Silvermere’s plans to stop Isla from reaching safety. That kind of information hadn’t been easy to get.

She turned another page. Lyrienne explained that Corvin disappeared after taking Isla to Ashcrest. He never returned to Silvermere or Redmont. Someone had met him after he completed what he’d been sent, to do.

“I learned that Corvin left Ashcrest after placing you there. He traveled north before disappearing again. I believe he went to meet the wolf who helped him. I intend to follow him.”

Isla stopped.

“Did she tell you where?”

“Not when she left.”

I looked at him.

“But you learned later.”

“Yes.”

Isla continued reading before asking anything else. The next pages returned to Darius and the life her parents had wanted for her. Lyrienne wrote about Silvermere and why they had chosen it.

“We wanted you somewhere you could grow knowing what you were. Your father wanted you to run beside the river and know the wolves who would protect you. We wanted you to have choices. Someone took those years from all of us.”

Isla closed her eyes. I kept hold of her hand. Nothing I said could replace what had been stolen from her. But now she knew her parents hadn’t abandoned her.

She opened her eyes and continued. Lyrienne wrote about the name Isalienne again. She explained that Darius had chosen part of it while she had chosen the rest.

“Your father called you Isla before you were born. It became our name for you before we ever held you. If you are reading this under another name, I hope some part of the one we gave you remained.”

Isla looked at me.

“They didn’t take all of it.”

“No.”
