Halvon.

I knew far too much about that name fox it to mean nothing. Caius had warned me about him before the High Council ever came to Wraithbone. Halvon had wanted uncertainty around me because uncertainty gave him something he could use.

Now Evander was telling us Halvon was Orin Valdyr’s son.

“Halvon is a Valdyr?”

Evander looked at me.

“Yes.”

I looked at Caius. He didn’t seem surprised that I remembered everything we’d learned about Halvon before the Council arrived. We’d spent days preparing for those wolves and what each of them wanted from me.

“He served on the Council with you.”

Evander nodded.

“He did.”

That made the connection worse. Evander had known about the Valdyr family while sitting on the same Council as Halvon. They had both been there while questions about my bond, my mark, and my place as a Celestial were being discussed.

“Did you know who his father was then?”

“Yes.”

I stared at him. Evander had kept that from everyone while Halon helped shape the Council’s position concerning me. There was no chance I was dismissing that as unimportant.

Caius moved nearer to the table.

“Did Halvon know about your family’s connection to the Keepers?”

Evander didn’t answer right away.

“I believe so.”

Pryor closed the record in front of him. He looked toward the Valdyr name again before reaching for another book. Halvon’s family had been sitting in those records while we’d been looking for answers elsewhere.

I remembered the days Calus spent preparing me for the High Council. He’d told me Halvon would push harder than Sorin and make his questions sound reasonable. He’d also told me Halvon wanted

Wraithbone distracted.

At the time, we’d believed his reasons were political.

“Halvon wanted the old Celestial laws challenged.”

Evander looked at me

“Yes.”

I remembered it clearly. Halvon had led the faction that questioned whether laws written centuries ago should still control what happened with a Celestial wolf. He’d wanted the uncertainty to continue.

“Was that because I’m Celestial?”

Evarider watched me.

“I can’t answer for Halvon.”

I didn’t like that answer, but it was probably true. Whatever Evander knew about the Valdyrs didn’t mean Halvon had shared his plans with him. They could have sat on the same Council for years without trusting each other.

Caius looked at Evander.

“Did Halvon ever speak to you about Isla before the Council came to Wraithbone?”

“Yes.”

I leaned closer.

“What did he ask?”

Evander thought before answering. Halvon had wanted to know how much the Council actually knew about Celestial wolves. He’d also asked whether any old records had been found concerning the return of

one.

“Before you questioned me about Vaela?”

“Before.”

That changed something. Halvon had already been asking about Celestials before Evander came to our door with his strange question. His interest hadn’t started when the Council arrived at Wraithbone.

“Did you tell him about the question your father taught you?”

“No.”

I studied Evander’s face, If he was telling the truth, Halvon hadn’t learned about Vaela through him. That meant

could have come directly through the Valdyr family.

Pryor nodded. Orin had visited the Council around the time I woke, then appeared in Ashcrest years later to make sure I was alive, Somewhere between those events, he had also raised a son who eventually became a Council member.

I thought about Halvon sitting across from me.

All those questions.

ssibly.”

didn’t like how easily that possibility fit. Halvon had opposed Sorin’s attempts to force a clear timeline around my bond. At the time, we’d believed he wanted uncertainty because it weakened Wraithbone politically.

But uncertainty had also delayed the Council’s control over me.

Vaela moved inside me.

‘Don’t trust him yet.’

‘I don’t.’

That was one thing I wasn’t going to do. Orin checking on me as a child didn’t prove the Valdyrs were protecting me. The letter had already warned us that not every Keeper protected me.

I looked at Evander.

“What did Orin teach Halvon?”

Evander shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Caius watched him.

“But you know something.”

He believed the Council was created to protect order, not control Celestials.”

That sounded very different from Varen. Varen had feared what a Celestial could become outside Council control. Orin apparently believed the Council had no right to control one at all.

“And Halvon believes the same thing?”

“I don’t know.”

Again, we reached the same problem. Orin’s beliefs didn’t automatically belong to his son. Halvon could have erited his family’s knowledge without sharing their reasons for protecting it.
