The Alpha King And His Chosen Luna novel Chapter 66

A choice I made

(Isla)

He kissed me.

That was the thought that sat in me when he pulled back. Not complex. Not layered with anything else. Just that. Simple and real and so far outside anything I’d expected from this day or this lake or this quiet that I sat with it for a moment without trying to do anything with it.

He’d asked first.

That was the part I kept returning to as we sat there afterward with the water in front of us and the light changing above the tree line. He’d looked at me and asked and waited for my answer. When I said yes he’d kissed me once and pulled back and not made anything more of it than what it was.

A choice I’d made.

Mine entirely.

I looked at the lake.

The water was still and the cold was real against my face. Somewhere behind us the forest was quiet. None of it felt urgent or pressing or like something I needed to navigate carefully. It just felt like sitting beside someone at the end of a day that had been full of things, finding that the fullness of it had settled into something manageable.

He wasn’t looking at me.

He was looking at the water the same way I was. Unhurried. Not waiting for me to say something or do something or process the moment in any particular way. Just sitting. The same way he sat in the library or at the table or in the chair across from me in my room. Present without pressing.

I’d spent a long time being afraid of presence.

Of what it meant when someone was near me and what they wanted from that nearness and how much it was going to cost before they moved on. Every person who’d been close to me in Ashcrest had wanted something from the closeness. Even the ones who hadn’t been cruel had wanted something. The comfort of believing they were better than the ones who were. The small satisfaction of proximity to someone worse off than them.

He didn’t want that.

I’d been trying to figure out what he did want since the shack. The answer I kept arriving at was simpler and more disorienting than anything I’d prepared for. He wanted me to be alright. Not as a project. Not as something to fix or manage or take credit for. Just as a fact he cared about for its own sake.

That was still strange to hold.

But it was getting less strange.

I thought about the kiss.

Clarm

# had lasted only a moment. No pressure in it. When he pulled back his expression had been the same as It always was; controlled and present, giving nothing away except the thing that was always underneath it.

That particular quality of attention I’d stopped being able to pretend I didn’t notice.

I hadn’t flinched.

That was the thing I noticed most clearly now that I was sitting with it. He’d leaned toward me and my body hadn’t run the automatic check it ran every time something came toward it. I’d just been there and let it happen.

More than fine.

I wasn’t ready to look at that part directly yet. But it was there.

The light across the lake had gone to the deeper grey that came just before dark properly arrived. The cold had gotten into my hands inside my coat pockets. My breath was visible when I exhaled. The rock beneath us had transferred most of its cold into me by now but I wasn’t ready to leave yet. He clearly wasn’t either.

I thought about what he’d said.

The word didn’t change. You did.

I’d been turning that over since he said it. Not because I doubted it. Because it was the first time anyone had named what I’d been feeling in a way that landed precisely on the thing itself without going around it. Something in me had shifted. He’d seen it clearly enough to name it plainly. That mattered more than I had words for.

He’d also seen the warrior situation for what it was without me having to explain it.

I’d told him because I wanted him to know. Because the lake and the quiet had made it easy to say. Because I trusted him with it. That last part had arrived without announcement somewhere in the conversation. I’d noticed it and let it stay.

I trusted him.

Not completely. Not without the part of me that was still watching, still waiting for the shape of things to shift. But enough. More than I’d trusted anyone since before understood that trust had a cost attached to

  1. it.

I looked at the water and thought about how far that was from the girl who’d pressed herself into the corner of the shack and stared at the door and told herself nobody was coming.

Somebody had come.

He was sitting beside me at a lake at the edge of his territory in the cold. He’d asked before he kissed me. He hadn’t made anything of it afterward. None of that was something I’d practiced for or hoped for or believed was coming.

It had come anyway.

I exhaled and watched my breath disappear into the cold air.

The dark was coming in properly now. The lake was going from grey to black at the edges. We’d been sitting long enough that the quiet between us had taken on a different quality, not the quiet of people
