“Ashcrest won’t return to what it was,” I continued. “It answers to me now.” I let that settle before I went on. “Nothing changes here without my order.”

She listened without interrupting. She didn’t look away this time. She held the words where they were given.

“You need to change,” I said. I kept my voice even and didn’t look away. There was nothing more to add to it. It was simple, and it stayed that way.

Her fingers stilled for a moment. Then she looked at me fully, “I don’t have anything,” she said. There was

no strain in it.

“You do,” I answered. I turned and walked to the table near the wall. The clothes had been left there earlier, folded and untouched. I picked them up and brought them back.

“Sera left these for you,” I said. I held them out without stepping closer than needed. She looked at them for a moment. Then she reached for them.

Her hand didn’t shake. She took them with care, aware of what she was holding. “Thank you,” she said. I gave a single nod.

“The bathroom is there,” I said. I gestured to the side door. She followed the direction with her eyes. Then she looked back at me.

She didn’t hesitate. She moved past me without needing anything more said. The cloak stayed wrapped around her as she walked. Her steps stayed steady.

She reached the door and opened it. She paused for a moment before stepping inside. Then she closed it behind her. The room settled again.

I stayed where I was. I didn’t move toward the door or leave the space. My attention stayed where it needed to be. Nothing needed to be said.

Water ran for a short time. It didn’t last long. She wasn’t staying in there longer than needed. The sound stopped quickly.

I looked across the room. Nothing had changed, but the meaning had. This space no longer held only

command. It now held what came next.

Ashcrest had already begun to shift. The people who had controlled it were no longer in place. What they built wouldn’t hold. What replaced it would be different.

Movement came from the other side of the door. It stayed quiet and contained. Fabric shifted, steps moved across the floor. I didn’t interrupt it.

A moment later, the handle turned. The door opened. She stepped back into the room. The cloak was

gone.

The clothes fit her well enough. They weren’t hers, but they didn’t look out of place. She had already settled into them. Her hair was still damp.

She looked at me. “I’m done,” she said. It wasn’t an announcement. It was a statement.

“I nodded once. “Good,” I said. I didn’t add anything more. There was nothing else to say.

She stayed where she was for a moment. Then her gaze moved across the room again. It wasn’t searching. It was different now.

“You said nothing changes without your order,” she said. She looked back at me. There was no challenge

in it.

“Yes,” I answered. I held her gaze. She didn’t look away.
