Chapter 198

Cecilia’s POV
The room suddenly felt small. It was too quiet; too aware. Leopold stared at me as if I had personally wronged him. Well, I guess in his mind… I had. I wasn’t expecting to see him in my room; I assumed he would be with Sophia, tending to her every need.
But he wasn’t… he was here… with me.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and was about to say something… but then I saw the flicker of gold in his eyes and my breath
caught.
“Warren…” I whispered.
He stood, towering over me.
“Where have you been?”
My mouth went dry, preventing me from speaking. I was taken aback by the sudden question and the lingering worry that filled his tone. My heartbeat was racing against my chest, and I forced myself to take a step back.
“I was having brunch with some of the girls,” I tell him, folding my arms across my chest. “Not that I need to inform you of that: Shouldn’t you be with Sophia?”
He crinkled his nose as if he smelled something foul.
“I’m not fond of her company.”
I was surprised by this, and my brows raised.
“What do you mean? She’s your mate, Warren.”
He rolled his eyes as if he wasn’t completely convinced of that himself.
“Then why annoy me?” He murmured. “Why can’t I stop thinking about you when I am with her?”
I blinked, my eyes remaining on his. He wasn’t serious… was he?
“You shouldn’t be here,” I tell him, wrapping my arms around myself, desperate to keep myself together. “You should go.”
“No,” he said, his eyes narrowing. “We talk.”
“There’s nothing left for us to talk about,” I tell him. “We’ve said all we needed to say yesterday, and then Sophia got hurt, you
blamed me.”
“Leopold blamed you. I did not.”
I knew, theoretically, he was right, but I was still having trouble separating the man from the wolf. They were the same after all, even though they couldn’t communicate with one another.
“It doesn’t matter. He still chose her side. If he finds out that you are here with me… he will blame me for that too,” I tell him, “I have enough on my plate. I don’t need to add that as well.”
His frown deepened as he took a step closer to me.
“Cecilia, . I don’t trust Sophia. Leopold is blindly walking into a trap… I can sense it.”
My heart stopped in my chest as I looked up at him; he was very perceptive; I will give him that. I, too, no longer trusted Sophia, and I knew she was up to something as well, but it wasn’t any of my business. I needed to play my part, keep my head down, and wait for Landon to dismiss me so I could return to my pack and find out what truly happened to my mother.
“And what do you want me to do about that?” I asked, my voice was much colder than I meant it to be.

“Tell him.”
I froze.
“Tell him what?”
“Tell him I don’t want her as a mate,” Warren clarified. “Tell him to cancel the wedding. I don’t want her. Have him make you
queen.”
I almost choked on my own spit as an awkward and disbelieving laugh bubbled out of me.
“Are you absurd?” I asked, raising my brows. “What makes you think I would want to be queen?”
He raised his own brows.
“Every woman wants to be queen.”
I rolled my eyes; he sounded so conceded.
“That shows how little you actually know about most women, then,” I tell him. “Not every one of them wants to be queen. I certainly don’t.”
“Then what do you want?” He asked, desperation filling his voice as I had never heard. “I will give it to you.”
I shook my head at him.
“It’s not my business, Warren. It doesn’t have anything to do with me,” I tell him. “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing I can do
“You are the only one who can tell him what I say,” Warren said, stepping even closer to me, his eyes now pleading. “Please,
Cecilia. Tell him I don’t want her,’
“She’s your mate,” I remind him. “Warren, I-”
“She repulses me,” Warren blurted. “Her scent… is wrong. Her attitude is annoying. Her voice… makes me wince.
“Warren, stop,” I said, shaking my head. “You can’t speak like that
“It’s the truth.”
“She’s your mate,” I repeated slowly, emphasizing each word as though maybe hearing it again would make him understand the absurdity of what he was saying
