Chapter 300
Without another thought, I stood and went back to my mother’s closet. I knelt before the latch and placed the key inside; unlike the other key, this key fit perfectly, and it turned all the way until I heard a clicking sound; it was almost inaudible, but the door gave way and creaked open slightly from disuse.
My heart sank as I saw the box behind the secret latch-it was locked, and I knew this was another barrier in my search for the truth.
“Of course… another lock,” I muttered, sitting back on my legs, sighing.
The box, engraved with unfamiliar, intricate symbols that seemed to shimmer in the light, was beautiful yet utterly mysterious, with no keyhole in sight.
I lifted it, my eyes scanning the mystery symbols; there wasn’t even a keyhole for a key. How was one supposed to open this thing?
I ran my fingers along the edge, tracing the simple idly as I thought of ways to get this open, and then I felt something stinging one of my fingers. I pulled my hand back automatically to see a small trail of blood leaving my fingers and trickling down my forearm.
Confusion clouded me as I furrowed my brows, but it only lasted a moment because suddenly the box started to glow in my hands. My eyes grew impossibly large as it opened on its own.
“Our blood,” Lora breathed, and I startled at hearing her voice so suddenly, not expecting her to be so close to the surface, her voice sounding stronger than it had the last time I heard it. “It opened the box.”
“It must have been enchanted,” I reply in awe. “Do you think Mother did this?”
“I have no doubt that she did,” Lora answered.
I peeked inside the box, holding my breath as I saw the most gorgeous gold pendant I had ever seen.
A crescent moon cradled the profile of a wolf; its craftsmanship was unlike anything. Tiny blue gemstones formed the wolf’s eyes, sparkling brilliantly despite the years that had passed.
Along the outer edge, intricate vines curled.
Hidden among the leaves were tiny crowns so delicate, they were almost impossible to notice. The back of the pendant bore an unfamiliar crest.
A wolf standing beneath a crescent moon, encircled by twelve stars. And beneath it were words… written in a language I couldn’t read.
Lora stirred.
“Familiar,” she breathed.
“You recognize this?”
“Yes, but I have no idea where,” she admitted. “But very pretty.”
A sad smile tugged at my lips.
“Do you think this is the heirloom that she wanted to gift me? The one Diana and Sophia had been looking for?”
Before she could answer, I spotted something else in the box-a piece of parchment.

My pulse quickened as I picked it up and unfolded it carefully. The ink had faded slightly with time, but the handwriting remained elegant.
My dearest, Cecilia.
If these words have found you, then fate has been kinder to me than I ever dared hope.
First, I need you to know one thing: I love you so much. No matter what happens, I hope you carry that with you and never let anyone tell you otherwise.
The Silver Moon Pack might be the place you’ve grown up in, but it will never be your true home. What I have to tell you will forever change your perspective on who you really are. I’m sorry that the truth has been kept from you for all of these years. You must know everything.
Just as I was about to read further, the closet door was shoved open with so much force that a scream left me. Standing in front of me were gammas, their faces masked, and when I saw the symbols on their uniforms, my chest tightened, and my heart shattered.
They were gammas from the royal palace.
