Chapter 322
Cecilia’s POV
“She’s what?!”
“I’m what?!”
Both Lucy and I spoke at the same time. My hands instantly flew to my stomach, my heart beating erratically.
I was pregnant. I couldn’t be pregnant? Who was the father??
Question after question kept firing off in my head. The worst-case scenario started to fill my head, and a sense of dread fell over me.
“She seems to be a little over a month pregnant,” Mariah continued.
“Could she have been attacked?” Lucy asked, voicing my worst fear.
“I’m not sure, but regardless, something tells me that the father of this baby is going to be looking for her,” Mariah said, making another fear creep into the back of my mind.
I suddenly couldn’t breathe; there was no air outside. It was like it was sucked directly from my lungs.
“There’s no need to panic,” Lucy said, trying to sound reassuring, but I could see the worry on her face as she looked me over. “We will just go back inside and figure it out as we go.
“We should make sure that the baby is healthy,” Mariah suggested. “First and foremost. I’m sure the wolfsbane in your system weakened the fetus.”
My heart ached at the thought of something happening to my baby. A baby I didn’t even know about until just now. Tears built in my eyes.
“How could I not have known that I was pregnant?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Wouldn’t I feel some kind of way?”
“As I said, there’s wolfsbane in your system and that blocks out almost everything,” Mariah explained. “Come on, let’s get you inside and back to the infirmary so you can rest.”
Lucy gave me a sad smile when I looked at her.
“I’m sorry,” she said softly, looping her arm through mine again. “I had no idea. If I did… I wouldn’t have suggested we come out here.”
“I’m glad we did… I needed the air,” I tell her honestly. “It’s just so much information.”
She nodded.
“I know,” she breathed. “But you aren’t alone. I’m here and so is Mariah… and Alice whenever she reappears with more information about who kidnapped you.”
I bit my lower lip, nibbling on it thoughtfully as we walked back inside.
“Why are you so nice to me? I’m a stranger, and I could be dangerous,” I tell her.
She let out a snort of laughter.
“Trust me, you’re not dangerous, and even if you were, I’d be able to handle it no problem,” she told me, nudging

me lightly. “And I’m nice because I was raised to be. My parents are amazing. I know I say a lot of crap about not wanting to follow in their footsteps and be a queen… but I do love them, which is the reason why I haven’t run away. I want to make them proud. They’ve done so much for me my entire life, and I want to be able to repay them the favor. They deserve to retire. My father never wanted to be a King either, so he understands where I’m coming from.”
I raised my brows.
“He didn’t want to be a King?”
He shook his head.
“No, he wasn’t raised to be a King. It was always supposed to be his older sister. She was the one raised to be a queen. My father was the forgotten child, as he always said. His parents barely paid him any attention.”
She paused for a moment to gather her thoughts, and I let her.
“Despite his relationship with his parents, he had a good relationship with his sister, though. But because my father was pretty much ignored for most of his childhood, he was able to be an actual kid. He was able to make friends at school, whereas his sister was homeschooled her entire life… he was able to get dirty without anyone other than his nanny noticing. He was able to go out and have fun; most didn’t even know he was a prince. I admired that when he told me this story.”
“Wow, did your mom know he was a prince when they met?”
She shook her head.
“Not at first. They found out they were mates when he turned 18 during my aunt’s coronation. After a few months of dating and getting to know one another, she found out about his heritage, and she was upset he lied to her. She never saw herself as part of a royal family before, but he assured her that nothing would change between them. But then my aunt ran off with someone she claimed was her mate. My grandparents didn’t approve of him, but it didn’t matter to her. She gave up everything for him.”
“And that’s how your father got stuck being the King?”
She nodded, letting out a breath.
“Yup,” she said. “My mom was upset about the whole thing because she didn’t want to be a queen either, but she loved my father. They were mates, and she wanted to stand by him no matter what. They had to learn quickly how to be a King and Queen. Then my mother got pregnant with me. And because I’m the firstborn in the bloodline, I was the one who inherited the throne. But my father raised both Cedrik and me the same, not wanting to draw a wedge in the family as his parents did to him and his sister.”
