The Alpha King's Mind Reading Maid (Cecilia) novel Chapter 34

Chapter 34

“I wasn’t sure what kind of sweeteners you liked, so I brought you an assortment,” she explained.

“Thank you,” I told her.

When I thought she was going to leave, she didn’t. Awkwardly, I cleared my throat.

“Was there more?” I asked, unsure why she was still standing there.

Her cheeks turned pink.

“I was told to stay until you dismiss me,” she replied.

Of course, that was the rule for any maid. I felt foolish and let out a small laugh.

“Oh, right. Of course. You are dismissed,” I tell her.

She bowed her head, but she remained there for a beat too long, and then she lifted her gaze to meet mine, something sharp and calculating, making my chest feel tight.

“If you don’t mind me asking… how did you end up here?” She asked. “I couldn’t imagine you leaving Silver Moon. I always thought you loved the pack more than anything.”

I stared at her for a moment, wondering if I should tell her the truth or lie. But then I decided the truth would be best. It’s not like she could do anything with this new information anyway. She already knew my biggest secret here… that I wasn’t an Omega. “They were after someone I thought was my best friend,” I tell her, my voice steadier than I felt. “She was the Omega they wanted. She had turned 18 a few days before I did, and they came to collect her. But it turns out, she was actually my father’s secret child.”

Anna sucked in a sharp breath.

“The Alpha had a secret child?” She asked. “That’s scandalous,”

I nodded, trying to keep the emotions out of my voice. I’ve had time to sit with the fact that my father betrayed me. But talking about it brought up the emotions I had felt at the time. It was something that never truly got easier.

“To protect her, my father lied and told the guards that I was the Omega they sought. They brought me here, and I explained there was a mix-up with our names. I didn’t think they’d believe me if I told them I wasn’t an Omega. But I knew I could at least get them to call me by my real name.”

“And here you are,” she said, raising her brows. “The King’s concubine. It’s amazing what you have done for yourself. You should be so proud.”

Something about her voice made me pause. I looked at her and saw her assessing me. Though her words were positive and reassuring, her voice almost seemed bitter.

“Well, if I am dismissed, I should go now,” she said, bowing her head. “If you need me, ring that bell right there. It’s magically tied to me, so I can hear it no matter where I am.”

With that, she turned and left, once again leaving me alone.

I turned to the tea she had left for me; it sat untouched in the cup, my brows furrowed as I stared at the hot beverage.

“What’s wrong?” Lora asked, bringing me out of my thoughts.

“I don’t know. I just have a strange feeling about Anna,” I confess. “I might just be in my head.”

Lora didn’t reply, but a knock on the door drew my attention away anyway. I went to the door and pulled it open, only to find a guard standing in front of me. I sucked in a sharp breath at the sight of him standing so close, and I had to take a step back.

He handed me an envelope without saying anything, and I took it hesitantly before he turned and walked back down the hallway. I stared after him, confused.

I glanced at the envelope, my brows pinching together.

It had my name sprawled across the front. I didn’t recognize the handwriting. I stepped further in, not into my room, and closed the door. I carefully opened the envelope, uncovering the paper inside.

“You are invited to join the concubines in the gardens for a tea party at 5 pm. We hope to see you there.”
