Chapter 6
Cecilia’s POV
Leopold’s eyes narrowed in skepticism.
To my puzzlement, he doesn’t seem to pickup on what I’m hearing. But how can that be possible?
I know that it’s uncommon but not entirely unheard of for someone’s wolf to emerge in times of severe stress without being called upon. Even then, though, the person would normally be aware of what was happening.
The Alpha King, on the other hand, doesn’t appear to have any idea what his wolf is feering, let alone thinking,
“Are you going to answer me or just stand there?” Leopold asks, his voice harsher this time. “Why did you stop?”
I don’t have much time to think this through, but I know one thing to be certain. If I keep going, this is not going to end well for me.
“Sorry, Your Highness,” I say quickly. “Just making sure everything has been cleared to your satisfaction.”
He scowls. “I will let you know if I am dissatisfied with anything. Proceed.”
“Of course, Your Highness.”
Arrow in shoulder! STILL IN PAIN!
My ears ring from the roaring of his wolf, and I wince against my own will. I peer down at the Alpha King’s shoulder, my eyes frantically scouring the surface for any sort of mark or bruise on his skin that would help me figure out the location of the wound.
I know my window of opportunity is closing, and fast. I can’t risk wasting any more time, or I’ll be facing the wrath of both the impatient king and his injured wolf.
Kill, kill, KILL!
“Your Highness!” I blurt out. “I’m sorry, but I can’t continue.”
“Why not?” he asks, irritation punctuating his question.
“There seems to be an… injury of some sort. In your right shoulder.” I allow myself to take a single step back so I don’t look like I’m cowering in fear. On the inside, though, my heart feels like it’s going to pound out of my chest.
“An injury?” he asks.
“Yes, Your Highness,” I reply. “A wound that hasn’t fully healed. And, um, if I may… it is my humble opinion that you should be seen by a doctor.”
He looks at me, not saying a word. There’s an odd look in his eye. I dig my fingernails into my palms in an effort to keep my hands from shaking too noticeably as I listen to the deep guttural growls of his quick-tempered wolf.
Landon peers at me closely, then nods. “All right. You return to the king’s quarters. I’ll send for the doctor at once, and he will meet you there.”
I thank him graciously and head back to the king’s room, where I stand outside in the hallway and wait for the doctor.
It’s only a few minutes before he arrives, a short, white-haired man with thick glasses and a medical bag that looks as if it should be too heavy for him.
“Doctor Bromley,” he introduces himself without waiting for me to ask. “Here to see the Alpha King.”
I push open the doors and gesture for him to enter first. He briskly walks over to the king’s bedside and takes a deep and reverent bow.
“Your Majesty,” says Doctor Bromley.
Alpha King Leopold glances at him and nods. “My shoulder. The right one.”
I watch, keeping a safe distance, as the doctor begins the examination. He uses his fingers to gently push and prod at certain specific points along the king’s upper chest and arm, making sure not to apply any direct pressure to the shoulder itself.
Leopold sits, motionless, not even a trace of a grimace crossing his face. I catch myself subconsciously trying to imitate his stillness.
“Ahem,” Doctor Bromley says, deftly removing his glasses from his nose and squinting at the king’s shoulder.” You were hit in this shoulder by a silver arrow, correct?”
