Chapter 80

At that point, I was already pretty much done, so I put the decorations down and turned to face them fully.

“Too late; the cake is done, and he’s gorgeous if I do say so myself.”

“You will get yourself killed,” Mike said, his eyes wide. “Why are you testing him like this? He already grounded you ”

“Ever think that maybe he hates his birthday because everyone chooses to avoid him?”

“No,” they both said in unison, much like the girls did earlier.

I blinked.

“You’re all being ridiculous. Again, it’s just a cake… It’s not a party.”

“Why must you be so stubborn?” Landon asked, shaking his head.

“Guess it was just the way I was raised,” I retorted. “Now, help me with the forks and plates. If you’re good, I’ll let you have a slice.”

My tone turned teasing.

Neither of them cracked a smile; they only looked at one another. Landon let out a breath.

“Help her,” he murmured. “I need to be somewhere.”

He left without another word.

Mike stood there, awkwardly for a moment, and I raised my brows, my eyes flickering between him and the plates on the counter that I had set out earlier. With a sigh, he picked up the plates and forks, and I gave him a pleased and winning smile as I grabbed a candle from one of the drawers along with a lighter; then, I picked up the cake.

Mike helped me bring the stuff into my bedroom. I waited until after midnight before I got out of bed and grabbed the cake. Mike was still there when I opened the door, and his face was pale.

“Can I convince you not to do this?” He asked.

I shook my head.

“No, you can’t.”

I couldn’t explain it, but I knew in my gut that Warren needed this more than anything. I needed to prove to him that I was his friend and that I cherished him. I hoped this cake would speak the words I couldn’t say earlier.

Leopold was a deep sleeper, while Warren was a light one, so I knew that if I went into his room, Warren would be the one to wake. At least, that’s what I was hoping would happen.

Mike let out a breath as he grabbed the plates and forks from the table across from my room, and then he followed me to Leopold’s bedroom. I turned the knob, and his door opened with ease. Mike hesitated outside the bedroom door; I walked into the darkened room, and only the moon’s rays through the curtains guided my path.

Leopold was fast asleep in his bed, completely oblivious that I was there.

I went to the bedside table on the side where Leopold slept and placed the cake down, motioning for Mike to set the plates and forks on the small table on the other side of the room. Once he did, he motioned for me to follow him out of the room, but I shook my head and motioned for him to leave.

He hesitated, his eyes wide and his face pale. But something on my face must have convinced him because he sighed and left the room, closing the door behind him.

“Mmm, smells good,” I heard Warren saying sleepily. I knew he wasn’t fully awake yet, but I also knew this was my chance.

I added the candle and lit it with the lighter, watching as it flickered to life.

“Warren,” I whispered, trying to get his attention as I lifted the cake. He groaned softly, and then his eyes fluttered open, barely adjusting as I smiled and presented the cake. “Happy birthday.”
