The Alpha’s Secret Obsession Now novel Chapter 16

Chapter 16

Mar 4, 2026

The difference between friendship and something more lives in the details.

Zane brings me coffee this morning, made exactly how I like it—two sugars, splash of cream, hot enough that steam curls from the surface. He sets the mug on my worktable, ceramic clicking softly against wood.

“Thought you could use this,” he says, his smile easy and warm.

“How did you know my order?” I wrap my fingers around the heat, genuinely surprised.

“I pay attention, Morgan.” His eyes hold mine for a beat too long before he walks away.

When did he start memorizing the small things about me?

At dinner, he saves me a seat beside him despite Sarah’s pointed glare from across the candlelit table. His thigh presses warm against mine beneath the tablecloth, solid and deliberate.

“The roast is excellent tonight,” he murmurs, leaning close enough that his breath stirs the fine hairs at my temple.

“You’re sitting very close,” I observe, keeping my voice neutral while my skin prickles with awareness.

“Am I?” His grin carries no apology whatsoever. “I hadn’t noticed.”

Sarah’s fork scrapes against her plate with a sound like nails on glass, and I feel her fury burning from across the room.

The touches multiply over the following days until I can no longer pretend they’re accidental. His palm finds the small of my back when we walk through doorways, warmth seeping through thin fabric. His fingers brush mine when passing documents, rough calluses dragging against my skin.

“Morgan, walk with me tonight?” Zane appears at my door as amber sunlight bleeds across the mountains. “Perimeter patrol, I could use the company.”

“Don’t you usually patrol with the warriors?” I ask, already reaching for my jacket.

“I’d rather have you.” The honesty in his voice makes my stomach flip unexpectedly.

We leave the packhouse as twilight deepens into purple shadows, following trails worn smooth by generations of wolves. Pine needles crunch beneath our boots, releasing sharp green scent into the cooling air.

Stars emerge one by one as we climb higher, and the thin mountain air burns cold in my lungs.

“Morgan, I need to tell you something.” Zane stops walking, gravel shifting under his sudden stillness.

My heart hammers against my ribs with sudden dread.

Please don’t say what I think you’re going to say.

“I know things are complicated here,” he continues, his usual easy charm stripped away completely. “You’re new, you’re healing, and I understand that better than you realize.”

“Zane, whatever this is—” I start, but he steps closer, cutting off my retreat.

“Even knowing all of this, I can’t stop what I feel.” His jaw tightens, muscle jumping beneath stubbled skin. “I’ve tried, Morgan, believe me.”

Moonlight catches the gold flecks in his brown eyes, transforming them into molten copper.

“When you laugh, when you’re sad, when you’re just existing in the same room—” His voice roughens on each word like sandpaper. “You’re all I see, Morgan.”

“I don’t know what to say to that,” I whisper, the truth scraping past my dry lips.

“You’re all I want to see.” His hand rises to cup my face, palm warm and gentle where his brother’s grip burns possessive.

The contrast devastates me in ways I cannot name or examine too closely right now.

“Zane, I can’t give you what you’re asking for,” I manage, my voice barely steady.

“I know you feel something too.” His thumb strokes my cheekbone with heartbreaking tenderness. “I see it when you look at me, when you lean into my touch instead of pulling away.”

If only you knew what your brother does to me in the darkness.

Openly. Proudly.

I am lonely when Paul is not with me.

I am exhausted from being a secret, from existing only in stolen moments.

“I had an interesting evening,” I admit quietly, unable to meet his pale eyes.

“Tell me what happened, Morgan.” The command carries an edge sharp enough to draw blood.

“Zane confessed his feelings for me during perimeter patrol.” The words tumble out before I can soften their impact.

His entire body goes rigid, every muscle locking into dangerous stillness like a predator before the strike.

“And what did you say?” The question comes out deadly quiet.

“I didn’t say anything.” I finally look up, finding his face carved from cold marble. “I don’t know what to say, Paul.”

“So you let him hope.” His laugh is bitter enough to curdle milk in the glass.

“He could make me happy by simply choosing me openly.” The truth rips from my chest before I can cage it. “No shadows, no secrets, no hiding what we are to each other.”

“And I cannot offer you that.” His voice flattens into something hollow and unrecognizable.

“I know I can’t ask it from you.” Tears burn behind my eyes, salt stinging. “But I can’t help wanting to be the one for someone, Paul.”

“My own brother.” He steps backward toward the door, putting cold distance between our bodies. “My own blood.”

“Paul, please understand—” I reach for him, fingertips brushing empty air.

“I understand perfectly, Morgan.” The words drop like stones into still water.

He leaves without touching me, and the click of the closing door sounds like something ending.
