~ ROSELLE ~
I’m just realizing how stupid I was... I should have known this wasn’t the right time to bring up Ethan. Or maybe I should have said it in a milder way. Something that didn’t sound like, Hey, while you were away I was frolicking with your cousin... and he talked about having a big dick and fucking me better.
Ronan’s entire body has gone rigid, his grey eyes darkening with a mixture of shock and barely contained fury. I can feel the tension radiating off him, the way his jaw clenches so tightly it looks painful.
I bite my lip, regretting my bluntness immediately. I didn’t mean to make it sound so crude. I was just trying to be honest, to tell him the truth before it festered any longer. But now it feels like I’ve thrown a bomb into the middle of our fragile reconciliation.
"I don’t think he meant it..." I say quickly, trying to soften the blow. "He’s just trying to be Ethan..."
I watch his jaw clench and unclench, his eyes blinking slowly as his lashes flutter closed for a moment... and then open again.
"Do you feel any connection toward him?" he asks, his voice dangerously low.
I shake my head immediately. "No, I don’t... I felt a mate bond with Warren, but with him? I feel nothing."
Ronan’s expression hardens further. "I don’t want you going anywhere near Ethan. He’s a selfish, entitled prick who believes he must have everything I’ve got. He’s always been like that, greedy, manipulative, and completely psychotic when he doesn’t get what he wants. He slept with some of my other brides just to prove he could take what was mine. He doesn’t care about anyone but himself. If he thinks you’re his mate, he won’t stop until he tries to claim you. And I won’t let that happen."
"So, what are you going to do? Send him away?" I ask quietly.
Ronan’s jaw tightens, his grey eyes darkening with barely contained rage. "No. Ethan coming back here is for a reason. He always has a plan wrapped up his sleeve — some twisted, deranged scheme he’s been cooking up in that sick mind of his. The only way I can monitor him is when he’s close, right here in this pack. Until I figure out whatever psychotic game he’s playing, he stays. I need to watch him. Closely."
I nod.
A few hours later, Ronan returns to work, leaving me alone to curl up with my book. I would’ve loved to spend the afternoon in the library, but after Ronan’s warning, I’m better off staying inside until everything settles down.
Besides, I still haven’t figured out what I want to do around the pack. I’ve been meaning to find a job, but with everything that’s been happening, I haven’t really given it much thought. And deep down, I know I won’t be able to work comfortably until the pack fully accepts me.
At least, that’s what Ronan said when I brought up the idea.
Maybe he’s right.
Still, I think it’s time I asked him about the private library. If I’m going to be spending more time indoors, I might as well have somewhere peaceful to escape to.
Lunch passes in a blur, with Celeste and me chatting about taking a trip into the city one of these days.
