The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate novel Chapter 348

Chapter 348: Kings Who Hide Don’t Deserve Crowns

General Aldren Willow moved the Eastern Alliance army to the palace gates at dawn.

Four thousand soldiers, Fae-armored, dark-magic augmented, positioned in siege formation along the eastern approach to Aelindris. The banners bore the Willow crest: a black tree on a field of silver, the colors of a house that had served the crown for three hundred years and had decided, in the span of a single refused fated tie, that service was optional.

Atlas received the messenger in the throne room.

The message was brief:

General Willow requests a parley. The Eastern Alliance seeks resolution regarding the treatment of Vesper Willow. A neutral field has been designated in the forest beyond the eastern approach. The General will attend with a diplomatic guard. He requests the king attend in kind.

Atlas read the message. His face gave nothing away. His hand, the one holding the scroll, gave everything: a single tremor, brief and controlled, the involuntary response of a man who had spent thirty years reading political landscapes and recognized, in the phrasing of a parley request, the specific syntax of a trap.

He went anyway.

Because he was King Atlas Aelindor, and kings who refused parley under siege lost the moral authority to hold crowns.

He rode out through the eastern gate with his best guard of twelve.

His armor was ceremonial. His sword was real.

His eyes, as he passed through the gate, moved to the palace behind him one final time.

General Willow stood with a guard of twenty, which was eight more than the terms of parley permitted, and the eight extra were positioned at the tree line with their hands already glowing.

Atlas dismounted.

He walked to the center of the field alone, because a king who brings guards to a parley is a king who expects betrayal, and a king who walks alone is a king who has decided to meet it standing.

"Aldren." Atlas’s voice was even. "You requested parley. I am here."

General Willow was tall. Lean in the way old soldiers are lean, the fat burned away by decades of campaign, leaving only the efficient machinery of a man built for war.

"Your Majesty." Willow’s voice carried the warmth of a winter blade. "My daughter sits in your dungeons. Your son has rejected a fated matebond blessed by the Moon Goddess. The corruption consuming him is divine consequence for divine defiance. I am here to negotiate her release and the restoration of what fate has ordained."

"Your daughter broke into my son’s chambers," Atlas replied. "She has resisted arrest twice. She interrupted a bonding ceremony in front of two hundred nobles. The corruption consuming my son is accelerated beyond any natural timeline, and the dark magic my guards have detected on her person suggests the acceleration is deliberate."

Something moved behind General Willow’s eyes.

"Dark magic," he repeated. "You accuse my daughter of dark magic."
